A few questions about depression?
I am a 13 year old female and I think i might be clinically depressed.
I have a history of it in my family, both of my parents have depression, and i have heard that it is hereditary. I have panic attacks frequently and i often feel like crying for no reason at all. my life is pretty tough, my dad is away 5 out of 7 days a week to work far away from home. My sister who i am extremely close with moved away from home recently to go to college and i havent seen or talked to her in a long time. During the week i am alone with my mom (since my dad is away) and she is an alcoholic so i have to take care of her. I want to talk to my doctor about it the next time i have a physical but i dont know how to bring it up. will the doctor tell my parents?? I am ashamed but i feel like i need to get help rather than cut myself (which i have also been doing.)
So i need your opinions on whether i am depressed or not. i also need advice on how to talk to my doctor about it.
I took some quizzes online and they all said that i do have it.
Hi, I’m not a doctor, but I am a nurse and I am almost certain you do have clinical depression and anxiety disorder. I say this because, my father had an undiagnosed mood/anxiety disorder (panic attacks), etc. Beside you trying to deal with your own issues or illness, you are being required to "be the mother" to your mother – this is not your responsibility and I give you alot of credit. You must see and tell your doctor right away. Tell him or her exactly what has been going on. What you tell your doctor is strictly confidential, he will need your permission to get help for your mother or speak to your father and get you referred to a Psychiatrist for medication and an evaluation but you have to get help for yourself and your family. Every family needs a hero, sounds like your the one in this family. Stop the cutting, each time you get the urge, write your feelings down – journal. The doctor needs to know this – this is very important. Do not be ashamed, I have several mental health illnesses but because of seeing the right professionals, complying with the correct medications and therapy, I am doing great and my life is terrific. It can for you and your family too. The help is there, just reach out. Good luck. You’ll be fine.

First off, before going to a MD, try going to a Psychologist. Sometimes, just talking about what your going through and learning coping strategies, will help. If that isn’t enough, you can get meds to help you as well. Do your Research. There are alot of quacks out there who will screw you up more. Do you have a school counselor or a pastor who can guide you through this?

Yes you are depressed. You need to tell your doctor as soon as possible how you are feeling. Try and keep in contact with your sister (phone, letter, email or whatever).
Also it may be useful to talk to counsillor or teacher at school as you shouldn’t have to look after your mother. She’s the adult.

You are depressed. That’s how I am feeling currently too. Anxiety attacks, lack of motivation, (even though sometimes I do have my good days where I am super happy), my mind never feels at peace. It can’t really rest. Talk to your family, have them take you to a doctor. It’s easily fixed
