I get a frightening feeling when I’m driving. I start to feel dizzy, Iean slightly to the right and have the urge to take my foot off the gas and pull over (half the time I do). It feels like everything is closing in around me. This feeling is much worse at night. I’m embarassed and afraid at the same time.

I have been dealing with panic attacks for sometime now. I have had them while driving. Here is my suggestion to you. Pull the car over. Breath deeply in through the nose out through the mouth. Have you recently been in a car accident; this can cause an extra anxiety level for You. Get calming music for your car; do some breathing exercises focus on the road and where you are headed. If you feel that it is becoming an unsafe situation; you may want to talk to your doctor about medicine. Many people do not believe in it; I didn’t either; but after being on it for a while I am doing SO much better.

yes…stop driving, you’re a danger to yourself and everyone else that share the road with you

Yes. I get this sometimes which is why I dont drive. I get it when I leave the house sometimes too ( agoraphobia). There are ways to overcome these feelings (without medication). You have to ‘reprogram’ your mind which automatically gets these feelings out to you when you get in your car. Speak to someone about it, it is nothing to be embarrased about and it happens to thousands of people.

I know how you feel. They are anxiety attacks that can lead to a panic attack I’ve felt like that so many times and was under meds for anxiety and depression. You should go to your doctor and ask him/her about prozac.. They really worked for me!! Good luck!

Take a look at CBT – it’s a type of therapy that helps you re-think things. For example, I LOVE eating in nice restaurants but the large crowds made me want to crawl out of my skin to leave the place. I didn’t want to give up dining out so I found a way to find the table where my back was facing most of the people, so to me it felt like there were less people around. My anxiety became more manageable.
I also take anti-anxiety meds because I was isolating myself and that’s not good by any means. Definitely find a therapist that specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy. It really helps!
