Do you know fear is a defense mechanism? Fear helps you act against potential danger and not do dangerous things.

Fear of driving, in its innate and sublime form, is there to protect you. But when it turns into driving anxiety and panic attacks while driving, it hampers your performance rather than help you in any way.

Here we present you with solid tips and techniques to cure your panic and anxiety attacks while driving. When you apply these techniques you will see your panic attacks disappear, and what will remain is awareness to spot signs of fear and take appropriate action to protect yourself.

So don’t worry about fear, let it come to you whenever it is useful. And it is definitely not useful when you pull it towards you and multiply it a hundred times to create panic for yourself.

How to Prevent Fear Turning Into Panic or Anxiety While Driving

Most of us have a slight fear of driving. A frightful incident while driving creates an impression in our mind that plays to itself the next time we drive.

While most people manage to douse the fear, some tend to kindle it and inflame it with every passing incident. They make fuss over physical symptoms of fear like sweaty palms, trembling or dizziness, which makes them even more scared of driving, eventually ballooning into driving anxiety and panic attacks while driving.

The trick is to catch the moment of fear before it soars to uncontrollable heights.

I am undergoing a fear of driving desensitization program because I am having panic attacks while driving. My therapist wants me to watch commercials of cars driving on the highway. I did a search on Youtube for "car commercials" and went to various car dealership websites, but the former are sparse in the right type of movie and the latter often have just still shots in different directions. What search term can I use to find car commercials on Google or YouTube? They need to show the car being driven on the highway. Please help me find the right material! I need movies in which the car is driving on the highway. Thanks in advance.

any tips to overcome? It wasn’t bad as child but as adult… and me driving

This may sound like a scam and you don’t have to try it. I quickly researched the words "driving over a bridge phobia " and found a bunch of site’s so your not alone. This one seemed cool so check it out. There are more just google it…

I have been having anxiety with panic for about 2 years now and it has affected my driving somewhat.I can drive to areas close to my house but can’t seem to go much further than that. The doctor put me on xanax low dose0.25mg but if I take more than a pinch it makes me sleepy and it doesn’t seem to be helping me get over this panic.
It’s a feeling that’s hard to explain unless you’ve had this.I live alone and have no one to help me so I am forced to get out and do what I can, like get groceries, post office, etc.Thank God I live close to a shopping center.
My doctor(psychiatry)doesn’t have a clue what causes this in people because I asked him and he replied"do we know?" It seems these doctors think a pill will fix everything but I disagree.
I have never had this problem until now and have always been able to go anywhere. This is driving me insane, can anyone help me out?Is there any one who has this problem? What do you do about it? Please don’t be funny, this is serious.
Thank you

Anxiety is tough and the only real solution I’ve ever heard of is to push through the fear. Xanax, btw, should never be taken over a long period. I’ve seen people with constant tremors because of it, so be careful with it. As for driving, plan a drive longer that your limit. Plan it for when you DON’T have to be anywhere at a certain time. When you start to panic, feel anxious, pull over in a safe spot, put your head down on the steering wheel, close your eyes, and talk to yourself. Tell yourself it all right, nothing terrible is happening, you’re safe, etc. If you have specific fears, like "I’m going to lose control fo the car and crash", just remind yourself that you’re parked and safe. Ride through the fear and then drive on. I would say return home after the first panic attack, but the next time, go through two before you go home, and after that, three if necessary. I think this is called "desensitization" and it seems to be effective. Let me know if it helps, okay?

I really need to go register for classes. Its a college an hour away but the thought of driving there and registering is giving me a panic attack already, cant imagine actually being there. I have respirdone and invega (and seroquel but thats outa the question) that i can take to calm me down, but it might affect my driving abilities. Idk what i should do. d/x psychotic depression.

What you are going through I go through everyday of my life.

Things to keep in mind, you’ve done it before, you can do it again.
Everything is hard.
Deep relaxing breaths before you leave.
Don’t give yourself any time to think about leaving the house. Get up get dressed and get the *hell"* out of the house as soon as you can. The more you think the worse it gets.
Give yourself permission to pull over and have a rest if you need to.
Go for a fast walk for about 5 minutes to burn off the adrenaline before you get in the car.
Have some milk it does help you calm down.
Be brave, no matter how scary it is, you can do it.
Put a rubber band on your wrist, when you feel the panic snap the rubber band real hard. The brain can’t deal with two things at once, the pain of the rubber band will override the anxiety and panic.

I hope even one of these helps just a little bit, I have to go out today also……..I am not going to let the panic crap stop me this time.

Remember a panic attack can only last for a certain period of time.

I wrote a question recently about having panic attacks again after not having any for many years. They are now very bad and the other day I had the worst one I have ever had.

With my panic attacks I fear I will swallow my tongue and it has nothing to do with a heart attack. I only mention this because I know many people have them but they think they will have a heart attack and mine are different. I think in my mind I have picked something that can scare me more and it is a terrible feeling.

Anyway, when I had the major panic attack the other day I drove myself to an urgent care but didn’t go in because I felt stupid, like they would think I was dumb going in because I was having a panic attack. To me though I really feel like I could die and I felt very faint the other day. I am not one who is thinking about harming myself, in fact if I was I probably wouldn’t have these.

Well anyway I was just wondering if I am dumb to go to the urgent care?
Thank you for the advice. I actually started seeing a therapist again after not seeing one for several years because I wasn’t having attacks. I also take medication and it worked great for the past 9-10 years and then all of sudden they started coming back again, but never like the one I had on Friday.

I know I need to see my therapist but the last time I saw him he didn’t change my medication or anything, just recommended relaxation methods. I am not sure they will work for me but I haven’t tried them yet.

I am also a person who thinks if something happens it is because I did something.. for example I could eat cereal and have a panic attack and then I will think maybe the cereal had some type of affect on my. I know this sounds stupid and normally after I think these things I normally can clear it out of my head, I guess I associate things.

NO, it is NOT dumb to go to the E.R. I will be 100% honest with you though.

I too have very debilitating panic attacks; mine are classic, in that I have severe chest pain, cannot breath, I black out, my limbs lose 90% oxygen, my vision blurs, my blood pressure rises to near deathly levels, same with my pulse. I go pee like (honestly) 30+ times within 10 minute periods of time, I shake and convulse, and I "just know that I am dying:" (tho’ I am not; it is the body telling us that we have overloaded our stress index!!!)AND THEN…then there is that, once again "classic" symptom of FEELING LIKE DEATH IS IMMINENT, CAN OCCUR AT ANY MOMENT, AND IS AT THE DOOR. I have only been to the Emergency Room 3 times, once by ambulance (about a year and a half ago).

When I said that I would be honest with you; I meant IT: All three times I went to the ER, I was treated like a JOKE. Suppose I was a waste of their time since most health "care" proffessionals DO NOT HAVE the least bit of KNOWLEDGE, or COMPASSION for what is a highly known mental EPIDEMIC, especially in the USA. The nature of Panic and Anxiety ATTACKS are JUST THAT……A T T A C K S!!!

If we did not have these physical symptoms, and what "professionals" coin as "mental falsehood"….then we would not be pushed to rush ourselves (MANY thousands of Americans who would rather stick a fork in their hand than go to see a :"doctor")..we would not, for the sake of what :seems to be imminent death; go to the ER "just bec’ we :"FEEL" like we are dying", hmmm!

So, as you can see, I have not personally had any good or compassionate reaction where I live, concerning the help I sought out from hospitals. I am almost sure that the many years of my unchecked ability to handle my stress and bad circumstances….are what led to these recurring anxiety attacks. What I ended up doing; *BC I JUST COULDNT LIVE WITH THE UNCERTAINTY OF WHEN AND WHERE I WILL BE~THE NExT TIME THE ATTACK HAPPENS*, I ended up seeing a neurologist, and he prescribed me 1mg. of Xanax, 3x’s per day. This is SO THAT there be a CONTINUOUS FLOW of the med. in my system…so as to PREVENT an attack from even coming on.

The issue that you are facing with your fears about your tongue, is not uncommon. I have spoken to, and met in online "anxiety related forums"….OTHERS who have the same overwhelming fear. And I will tell you what I know, from a seasoned "veteran of anxiety"…..that you must CONTINUALLY RE-AFFIRM in your mind, and SPEAK IT OUT LOUD (when u are alone), that it is PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SWALLOW THE TONGUE, as it can only be swallowed if one were to actually severe this very, very strong muscle from the esophagus! LIKEWISE, you and I both NEED TO RE AFFIRM the facts (only after you have been MEDICALLY BY TESTING EXHAUSTIVELY_that you in fact DO NOT have heart failure concerns, lung or brain conditions too)….only then, can you begin to "re-wire" your brain by the transforming of your mind!!! THIS IS A BIBLICAL CONCEPT, if u did not know this already? ALL THIS IDEA BOILS DOWN TO IS THIS:
******When the first thoughts that accompany the symptoms of an anxiety attack enter your mind; it will do you well to first learn that YOU NEED TO NOT EXPEND your energy by wasting AIR…learn to breath effectively. Second~ as the thoughts of FEAR come upon you; tell yourself that this is a malfunction of your nervous system, and little else. (tho’ it could be a spiritual attack too, but I will not go into that)…..SIMPLY REPLACE THE FEARFUL THOUGHTS with thoughts of God’s PROMISES from HIS WORD; during the worst attact I EVER HAD, I opened up my bible and began reading OUTLOUD from the Old Testament book of Psalms….the LORD WILL bring you the comfort to get free from this; as HE is doing with me. THERE IS a HUGE misunderstanding, and lack of knowledge, concerning the POWER OF THE SPOKEN WORD OF GOD ALMIGHTY. His Word is LIVING, active, and able to transform lives. Believe, and pray alot. Talk to GOD as tho’ He were sitting right beside you; holding you! Bc’ the reality is, that GOD is omnipresent, and HE IS WITH YOU in your darkest times. I say these words bc’ I have KNOWN YESHUA (Jesus) perfectly, and have felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in my midst; during some very horrific, dire, abusive times in my life. Tho’ I am only 29 years old, I have been thru the VALLEY, and that dreadful "shadow of death", I have wandered the wilderness; KNOWING that in CHRIST YESHUA alone, I will…I CAN….have PERFECT, all encompassing PEACE, which the Bible describes as being "THE peace that passes ALL understanding"….this is the one and only kind of abiding joy and PEACE of mind, soul, and body that can carry you through any storm, sadness, trial or tribulation!

I do apologize for writing a book…lol!!! I just have a heart for helping those who have the horrible misfortune of enduring panic and anxiety disorders. I hope you will feel free to contact me if you need anything! My 360 link is in my Y!A profile, of course. I will be praying for you in the meantime; "cast all of your cares upon the Lord; for HE careth for YOU!" He IS here with you, and wants you to rely on HIM for answers. God Bless you, and my heart truly goes out to you. amen.
In Christ Y’shua Alone,
<>< seven ><>

I’m 19 and I am so nervous when it comes to driving. I actually have panic attacks when I get out on the road. I still haven’t taken my drivers test or anything because I’m so nervous. I’m actually considering just using public transportation for the rest of my life because I don’t think I’ll ever be comfortable driving. How do I get over this? Help! Thanks in advance!

Hi! I’m so sorry to hear you’re feeling bad. I used to get panic atatcks over driving. I think you should go out with a professional instructor in the first instance. However, to help you feel mor rationally about it and to get rid of your panic attacks, try the following 3 steps (they eliminated my panic attacks of 15 years):

1.Breathe properly – if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks and social anxiety. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/ It has been funded by NHS Scotland and has had great results thus far.

3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. This site has instructions on how to do it without the tapes (and other useful info): http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resources/minipax.cfm?mini_ID=23

With each of these steps, practise makes perfect. I hope this helps and you feel better soon. Don’t give up hope! Best of luck!

I recently got a panic attack as I was driving on a bridge. That was scary. Now I dont want to get on bridges anymore. What do I do?

Before going back on the bridges, imagine yourself driving on a bridge over and over. You can also listen to your favourite music at the same time to cheer you up. When you go driving, if you think it may be too nerve racking, avoid bridges for a while and try to have fun while driving elsewhere.
When you feel you are ready and feel relax when picturing yourself driving on a bridge, then start going when there is not much traffic. If you think it helps, you can get a driving coach just for an hour or so and ask them to help you with driving on bridges only, or you can also go with a friend with whom you feel comfortable with. (I always feel better when alone, but some people prefer it with a good friend).

My husband has a lot of anxiety but with the driving I think it’s developed into a phobia. He becomes completely debilitated. If he takes medication it’s ok but what is causing this? He doesn’t ever remember having some terrible driving accident in the past or any terrible experience related to driving. Also is there a way to cure this other than medication?

If the medication is working have him continue on it but it sounds like the medication is just masking the problem. Try changing his diet to slowly get rid of all stimulants and increase his B6 intake by including complex carbohydrates in his diet. GABA is the natural calming chemical in the brain and it has been shown that many anxiety sufferers are deficient in this natural neurotransmitter. B6 naturally increases the amount of GABA in the brain which produces a calming effect without the side effects of prescription medicine.
