?Too often panic or anxiety attacks are seen as an emotional problem needing deep counseling and stress management techniques as well as a plethora of anti-anxiety medications to “cure” the afflicted one. This is not to say these well-trod avenues don’t have their place, but it seems the chronic root cause just could be overlooked in the haste to quell the attacks. The key word here would be “chronic”, in that most likely the cause of these attacks have been months, even years in the making. That’s often a hard pill to swallow in that it implies it just may take some time to get the ball rolling in the other direction, in terms of the desired control and peace. This is really not necessarily the case, in that a solution may be a simple decision away.

The issue at hand regarding anxiety attacks is that nutrition from the foods ingested day in and day out really does have an influence not only on physical growth and development, but on brain function, hormonal activity and balance, and thus the overall emotional state of the individual. When the brain consistently does not get the nutrients it requires to function at optimal levels, or other outside influences in the environment negatively affect the digestion and absorption of the nutrients provided, as in the case of medications side effects, or alcohol consumption, it is just a matter of time before the nervous system feels the impact. The body can compensate for the lack of nutrients or other stressors that affect digestion for awhile, but over time symptoms will begin to develop, including nervous system stress.

It is not common knowledge, but science has determined that the gut is actually the “second brain” in the body. For instance, it has been discovered that roughly 70% of the serotonin, a calming neurotransmitter normally connected with the brain, is actually produced in the stomach. In order for this neurotransmitter to be readily available and useful to the body when needed, however, we must have a healthy “internal flora” in the gut—that is, a well-functioning digestive system. Therefore, the gut, and its functionality is really at the root of anxiety issues. The simple decision would be to determine to encourage healthy digestion through supplementing the diet with probiotics (friendly bacteria) and digestive enzymes. The diet should include whole foods with enzymes available such as raw fruit and vegetables, and fiber sources. It is also imperative at the same time to begin to eliminate junk food in the forms of fast foods and sodas. The high fructose corn syrup found in many pre-sweetened drinks is very damaging to the body and it’s nervous system and is to be avoided–so read your labels!

Studies have shown amino acids supplements to be very helpful in balancing brain chemistry. Amino acids are the “building blocks” of protein, and are easily absorbed into the system, providing vital nourishment for the brain, easing anxiety and creating a calm, peaceful state of mind. In addition, supplemental B complex vitamins, which are easily lost when under stress, are vital for brain and nerve activity. These vitamins are water soluble, meaning that stress in any form, whether it be mechanical, nutritional or emotional, can deplete them quickly. Many symptoms as simple as eye twitches to serious disease states could be alleviated with the supplementation of B Complex vitamins. Be aware that to limit your supplementation to one or two of the Complex (for example, B1 and B6) would run the risk of developing a deficiency of some of the others, therefore always include all of the B Complex vitamins in one complete formula.

The importance and benefit of taking a serious look at your nutrient intake when facing anxiety attacks, in addition to other stress reduction techniques cannot be over-stressed. This would include using probiotics to heal and strengthen the gut flora, especially if antibiotics have been used, and supplementing the diet with digestive enzymes to assist in the absorption of serotonin and other important nutrients for their calming effect on the nervous system. Then, once the digestive system is up and running, consider supplementing with amino acids and the complete B Complex vitamins on a regular basis as well in seeking to nourish the brain and nervous system. This is a balanced plan just about anyone who is serious about recovery to the fullest extent can and should implement so they can get on with enjoying their life to the fullest.

Jane Hilt, CNHP, B.S Nutrition and Digestive Enzyme Specialist, has had personal experiences with panic attacks in the past which actually motivated her to pursue an education in the field of Natural Health Sciences. She found great relief through the addition of probiotics and enzymes for better digestion, and through the use of liquid amino acids and B-Complex vitamins to support a strong healthy nervous system.

…today will be my third day on Zoloft to control panic attacks I saw the pschytrist and told her I was doing a lot better I was barely having panic attacks and I was starting to feel more comfortable with life. so she asked how many panics do you have in a day I said I used to panic all day I would get the feeling of passing out my heart would race ect it would happen about 4-5 times a day then it went down to once a day and then it was like onc a week (still with anxiety but feeling a lot better) and then when I had seen her I hadn’t had fpr almost 4 weeks and I told her I got lil ones very very mild that I could control and blow off…well she still prescribed me Zoloft 50mg for 3 months….so today will be my third day and my panic is back my thoughts are back everything…I actually woke up oin a panic at 4am with chest pain….it took me 2 hours to get back to bed…..so I need help…ar things suppose to get worse before thy are better with Zoloft?? I can’t do this again I was almost panic free by myself???do I wait another 2 weeks to see what happens?? Please help me..
I will be calling the doc but she doesn’t get in till 11am.!!

She should have prescribed a benzodiazapine like Xanax or Ativan or Klonopin. But doctors are so scared to prescribe medication that actually treats the condition that the patients suffer. Sometimes a controlled, potentially addictive medication like Xanax is necessary. That would stop your panic attacks. My best friend is like a doctor, she’s a Nurse Practitioner so she can prescribe things with the approval of her superiors which never question her, and she told me that doctors will prescribe SSRI’s like Zoloft for panic attacks ,hoping that you will get some benefit from that, knowing that you really need a benzo. They are afraid to prescribe the good stuff. One way she told me that works is the direct approach. Tell them "I have done research and benzodiazapines would help my panic attacks, do you prescribe those? And if not, who could I go to." She claims that that’ll work every time. I’m not trying to get you addicted to pills, but you need something like Xanax or similar to stop your attacks. I used to have them horribly until I started taking Klonopin, know I never have them, ever.

For little over a week now i have been suffering from panic attacks several times a day, maybe 6 or 7.. sometime 9 or 10. They come on for no apparent reason, even if i’m just sitting on my sofa watching television, or walking my normal route to the shops. I suddenly feel sheer dread, like the world is closing in on me. I’m a single mum to a 7month old, i need to get these attacks under control. How can i do that?

I know how you feel. I have bipolar disorder and I sometimes have panic attacks. It sounds like you have a chemical imbalance. Anxiety is normal in humans for survival but excessive anxiety can cause problems (ie panic attacks). The human brain can’t tell the difference between what it sees and what it remembers. Has anything happened to you in the past that has set this off? Certain environments and conditions can stimulate previous memories that have made you nervous. Along with a chemical imbalance can make this worse and irrational. Go to the doctor and ask for an anti depressant and maybe xanax. This should help calm you down. Trust me. I know from experience.

i really need help on this one. how do you control doubts or stop having doubts when you have panic attacks? please! i really need help on this one, for my best friend.

Doubts are just part of the ideas which surround panic attacks. It’s hard to say exactly what a panic attack is – the nerves just go nuts and fire like crazy. If you observe carefully you’ll notice that you don’t even necessarily have to be scared – the panic part is mostly a physical thing. The mind searches around quickly for a reason for all this – and finding no reason then it begins to make stuff up – perhaps these are the "doubts" you speak of.

It’s said that this anxiety/panic is telling you a story – perhaps something happened in your distant past – as a small child – which scared the crap out of you. It got repressed or "forgotten" – and then later in life it returns. But now all you get is the crazy fear-like stuff – you don’t know the reason this is happening.

So that’s what psychiatry is supposed to be all about – putting together what really happened in the past with how you feel now. And when this is done, that’s when the story is told and the panic attack doesn’t need to occur anymore.

I keep having them and im 25 I want it to stop so I dont die of one when im 50 years old!! I have a phobia that I want to overcome but it seems that my phobia seems to always win!! Because I cant control myself when I get a panic attack!! What can I do is there anyone that has conquered a phobia!!?? Anyone that can give me helpful advice thanks!!

Sounds like you need some counseling. You need to talk to someone about this. I started getting horrible panic attacks back in 2006 and it took depression medication and a few years before I could honestly say that I haven’t had one in over a year. The most important thing you can do is realize that you are actually still breathing, find out what the root of the problem is, and seek some professional help.. That’s what they’re there for

Hi I have been suffering on and off from panic attacks for over 20 years! Now they are back again, I have had my heart checked and it is fine, but I just cant seem to control these things and the fear it be a heart attack! I know thats stupid. Has anyone managed to beat this thing and how?

The body’s chemical processes, one’s life experiences, and many other factors play a role. There can be specific elements of your life and environment that make you anxious and contribute to the problem of anxiety, such as work pressure, academic expectations, or major illness, or there can be a general existential crisis. Constant worry can cause panic attacks
Aromatherapy is a good treatment for anxiety, and you can do it on your own. Lavender oil is particularly effective, but you can also use jasmine or sandalwood.

Vitamin deficiencies – Vitamin B in particular can often cause anxiety. Try taking a daily supplement of a B-complex tablet.
Learn some meditation and yoga techniques to calm yourself. If nothing else, closing your eyes and breathing deeply will do. These techniques can be used whenever you start to get an anxiety attack, and also as part of your daily routine.
