Panic Attacks Workbook: A Guided Program for Beating the Panic Trick by David Carbonell Ph.D. This will be the best $17 you ever spend. I loved this book. I utilize the techniques daily. It takes some time to re-train your brain, but it is well worth it.

For the most part, I know what triggers my panic attacks, a few of them are: parades, parties, and Christmas. My solution is to avoid these things like the plague if at all possible. If I feel one coming on, if I can, I go outside and try to walk it off and it usually works.
I’d like to know what methods you use to deal with this problem.

I suffer from anxiety attacks too. I usually try to take deep breaths, and like you, I usually feel the need to go for a walk to shake it off. Another thing that has helped me is to see a psychotherapist. He helps me with relaxation techniques and also does hypnotherapy to help me deal with my anxiety. At first I was afraid and even skeptical of the hypnosis, but it has helped me a great deal. Usually during the hypnosis, he will start me with deep breathing and relaxation, then he has me visualize a safe place and then visualize whatever is causing my anxiety. You focus on it until you feel it subside. It really helps.Though I still get anxiety, I have these ways to help me cope. Good Luck!!

when you start panicking and feeling sick and shaking, how do you calm yourself down? what do you do?

I found that all relaxation and breathing techniques for the prevention of anxiety attacks only worked to a degree. Often I would get one moment of anxiety/panic under control, only to be anxious again soon afterwards.

Fortunately I stumbled across an online anxiety reduction method last year ( http://www.anxietyreliefmethod.com ). The method enabled me to prevent anxiety attacks and even stop fearing them which was half the struggle. The technique has been successful for many people and I personally recommend it but each to their own.

I hope you find your solution to this serious problem.

i’m a business student with about 3yrs left. I have no one to help me and loans are stacking up. I work and go to school and I make $18.00 an hour. I live on my own and pay my own bills. Thank god I dont have kids. But then again I’d be able to get more help with my school if i had kids. I’m a little bitter about that. Just cause i’m not married and don’t have kids i dont quilify for a butt load of financial aide out there. I HATE being in debt. My total loans will be about 60,000!! How can i deal with that. I try to tell myself this is America and just about every adult American is in debt. But 60,000; i’m in a panic!!! I know in the long run i’ll have my degree and it will be worth it, but just for now i don’t know how to deal!

Just know what you are doing is very admirable. I don’t understand why you can’t get financial help and yet we will offer scholarships to foreign students. I don’t know how much further you have to go until you graduate but have you thought of applying to companies who might help pay for your education. You might end up owing them some years of employment but there are some companies out there which may be able to assist you. Another suggestion is joining the military for a couple of years. They will also compensate for education. Best of luck to you and I hope these ideas help you.

I started having attacks when i went to college last year.i don’t really know how they started but i do know they have ruined my life.but i have them and i don’t know how to deal. i can’t go to the stores, mall, anywhere. i haven’t been out of my neighborhood in months. i only have my permit but the anxiety makes me not want to drive because i have them when i drive. so i haven’t drive in months either and i really want my license to drive and get a job without freaking out every two seconds.. i just want to go back to normal. does anyone know how to get rid of anxiety all together or to help get rid of it somehow over time or anything? thanks.

i recommend seeing a psychiatrist and getting their opinion.. they may be able to suggest medication if needed.. and talk therapy is very beneficial.. the best thing about a therapist is that they don’t know you.. therefore they don’t have any personal opinions towards you.. so you get honest, unbiased help..

one of the best depression/anxiety relievers i can recommend is exercise.. it takes your focus off what’s bothering you and hey it’s just good in general.. exercise also releases serotonin, dopamine and a few other nuerotransmitters in your brain.. serotonin deals with sleep and mood regulation and dopamine is related to pleasure and happiness.. those chemicals i just mentioned are the ones that your brain lacks when depressed.. exercise helps to balance them.. this has been clinically proven to work faster and longer than medication.. simply taking a twenty minute walk each day could really help..

exercise also releases endorphins.. the body’s natural pain killers.. this is related to "runner’s high"..

other than exercise you could try deep breathing, muscle relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, listening to music, writing in a journal, or talking to a friend about it.. i also drink ungodly amounts of tea.. haha..

get a good social support network.. talk to a friend or family member about how you feel..

take time out for yourself each day.. to just reflect, relax, and settle your thoughts.. do things that relax you and that you enjoy..

when you lie down to sleep, concentrate on your breathing.. just keep a steady inhale and exhale.. in through your nose and out through your mouth.. this will help to calm your heart rate and hopefully help you sleep.. do this anytime you feel yourself getting anxious also..

i hope this helps.. and best of luck..

I have panic disorder (I’ve had it for a long time) and usually find that it is totally under control. However, yesterday afternoon I had a really horrible panic attack. I hate the fact that I instantly run for my bottle of klonopin (it really does help, though!) but the meds took a good 30 minutes before they really kicked in. I tried doing the deep breathing (from the abdomen), etc…but I still had to suffer with that HORRIBLE and terrifying feelings for 30 minutes before the attack subsided. So, I want to know from people that actually have problems with panic attacks..What do YOU do WHILE you are in the midst of one to calm yourself down? Serious answers only. Please don’t tell me "just relax" because it isn’t as simple as that! Thanks:)
by the way: I’m under a doc’s care for this, AND I’ve had counseling many, many times (but ultimately, it doesn’t help with the attacks all that much) and I’ve tried meditation, etc…

This is the best advice I can think of. Everytime you get a panic attack it’s not going to be the same place at the same time. So you can’t just sit and scream. That’s just bull. Let’s be realistic. Do that on a plane and see the cops when you land, OK?? First things first. Don’t let yourself talk to you….talk to yourself. Don’t make matters worse by thinking oh no this is it….I am dying, I am dizzy or my heart is going fast. Even if your heart is going fast it’s going fast for a reason. The adrenaline gland sends out pure adrenaline and your body is in flight or fight mode. Depending on where you are you want to get out and leave…..work, the train, airplane, movie, concert, mall, grocery store, friends party, the beach or a long drive far from home and safety. I know this because I have lived like this for a very long time and I have set myself up for failure from not accepting panic for what it is. It’s FEAR….False Evidence Appearing Real. I have lied to myself over and over. I have convinced myself that I am dying when my heart goes 187 waking up from sleep. But I have no evidence at all to this. My heart can handle that all day long if it had to. Read a book by Dr. Claire Weekes and you will be amazed what information this old book has in it for you. Taking deep breaths can work but what if you can’t focus at that point and time. What if everything around is too loud?? Too bright and you just can’t focus on breathing? Self talk…..talk to yourself and say this is going to pass it always has it always will. This will not harm me in anyway shape or form. Damn it! This feels really strong this attack and very uncomfortable but I will pull through and realize it’s just another trick…. a trick called anxiety/panic. Each time it’s over realize how all those negative thoughts you had did not come to pass. What does that tell you? You are perfectly fine and this panic does not control you …..you control it. Good luck my friend.

I am a sophomore in High School and I’ve been having panic attacks. Last week I suddenly was shaking, couldn’t breathe, had to go to the bathroom, and dizzy. It was the first time that happened to me and I was really scared. I thought it was never going to happen again but on Monday I ran out of class and to the bathroom due to one and Tuesday I also experienced a panic attack and run to the bathroom again. Today I had two. They seem to be getting worse as time goes on. I’ve just told my dad about it today and only one of my friends knows about the attacks. What I need to know is:
1. how can I deal with an attack when it happens again?
2. How should I tell my teachers so I can leave the class when they happen?
3. Where should I go during an attack?

I used to get a lot of panic attacks and suffer from lots of anxiety, I travel a lot and hate flying however because of my business I have to to keep it growing. I have been using NLP techniques and meditation and it seems to work pretty well however I have been looking at this site and reading all the success stories of people curing their panic attacks and anxiety naturally.

I don’t like taking mediactions so a natrual cure to panic attacks is great fpr me, so far I haven;t triued this out but it seems lots of other folks have with great success, if anyone has tried please let me know how you get a long

I woke up this morning really freaking out, part of me wonders if its worrying about the blood test I had yesterday and the results of it – I could possibly be anemic.
Am also in a bit of debt – which is sort of manageable but its really playing on my mind and I just got really scared this hasnt happened to me for a long time I went to the doctors last week because of chest pains and shortness of breath – I attribute that to stress but my doctor wanted me to have a blood test for anemia I suppose now I’m eating differently as opposed to almost starving myself as I did a few weeks back my thoughts are clearer but I dont know if all this the panic attacks, the chest pains and shortness of breath are all linked.

How can I prevent this in future cos it was horrible I wasnt able to think straight.

It already sounds like you are working on it by eating better.
Try to find ways of letting out the stress you are feeling like
taking walks, sports or a hobby, or go out with or spend
time with friends and family. It should help some. Also you
might check with your doctor on how to get rid of or deal
with the panic attacks and see if he/she has any other
suggestions. Good luck.
