I was given Metoprolol Tartrate by a cardiologist after I acually asked him for Beta Blockers for my panic attacks. He said that I really don’t need it but he can give me one to use it if I need it. He had prescibed me metoprolol tartrate 25mg and told me that take it ONLY if I get heart palpitations during a panic attack 2 times a day for one day and stop it till the next attack occurs. But he also told me to try Xanax first, and if the blood preassure does not go down , and the palpitations do not stop than told me to take Metoprolol tartrate.
I haven’t had any panic attacks last more than 30 minites , and both my blood preassure and racing heart rate goe down right after I take xanax, so I did not use this medication yet.
I read about this drug, it says it needs to be taken daily. I also saw that Propranolol and atenolol seem to be more effective for panic disorder.
I do not have any cardiac problmes, I had cleared all tests. But suffer from severe anxiety and panic disorder which can get my heart to beat 110 to 120, The highest 130, no chest pain at all. This episode lasts about 20 minutes to 30 minutes.
I run everyday, cholesterol levels are very good. LDL 41 HDL 80, Triglycerides 27.
Holter, EKG, Stress test and echo had not shown any problems.
But I suffer from panic disorder.
My blood preassure is usually 110 over 70 but it also goes high during a panic attack to first 140 over 70, if I take Xanax right there it stabilizes and panic goes away, if I don’t than my blood preassure keeps going higher to 150 over 80, 160, over 80, The highest 170 over 80. And goes down back to normal right after I take Xanax with in 10 minutes,
I get those panic attacks 5 -6 times a year. sometimes 10 times a year.
what should I do? shoukd I take the Xanax or the Metoprolol tartrate during a panic attack?
If the Xanax works, it would probably be better to stick with the Xanax. I’ve been given Propranolol for performance anxiety, but I hardly use it because 1) It directly works against my Albuterol for my asthma making both ineffective and 2) the benzodiazepines have (in myself at least) proven to be more effective. Generally, beta-blockers are for those with high blood pressure, and since yours is usually normal, and high blood pressure is symptom of a panic attack, I don’t think that beta-blockers are the best decision. Plus, you say the Xanax works, so if you have something that works well, you should probably just stick with that. Just make sure you take it before your blood pressure gets too high, and it sounds like you will be fine.
