Honestly it depends on the person. Many people who think they are having panic attacks are just having a "moment" and once passed they are fine. If you are indeed having panic attacks medication would help so that the panic attack would not last as long and not be as severe.

Keep in mind though that if you are having regular panic attacks that it may be an anxiety problem that causes them. If this is the case several medications are out there for daily use. Then should a panic attack still occur most doctors will give you a rx for a quick acting medication.

I wake up feeling of empty stomach and cant really eat and how long does it usually take for my stomach to bother me?

A pill might ease this complaint but it will still exist.
Then the medication will have side effects like on your stomach

Do You Feel Any Of The Following Bodily Sensations?

•Dizzy spells leading to panic
•Tightness in throat and chest- shortness of breath
•Racing heart with tingle sensations
•Hot flushes followed by waves of anxiety
•Obsessive worries and unwanted thoughts
•Not feeling connected to what is going on around you
•Overwhelming fear that the anxiety will push you over the edge?
You Must Learn To Break The Fear Of Having Another Panic Attack Or You Will Never Experience Complete Freedom From Anxiety

-The anticipation of a panic attack starts the wave cycle of anxiety in motion.

-The foundation of a future panic attack is laid hours before you actually experience one.

-The slightest stress trigger will then launch the full blown panic attack into motion.

-Panic manifests itself in approximately 20 minute wave like formations.

There is one key factor that makes the difference between those who fully eliminate panic attacks from their lives and those who do not. The key ingredient is not medication, lifestyle changes, or relaxation exercises. It is when the individual no longer fears the thought of having a panic attack..

This may seem like a simplified and obvious observation but give it careful consideration. The one thing that has you searching for a solution to anxiety and panic attacks this very moment is the fear of having another one.

The first time a person experiences a panic attack it can feel like their world is falling down around them. Nowhere feels safe as the anxiety becomes like a stalker lurking in the background.
When this happens people begin to either avoid situations that make them anxious or they medicate themselves to the point where they are numb to the fear. I am sure you will agree neither of the above is a satisfactory solution.
For a non medical solution see

I would like to get on medication (paxil) for panic attacks and constant worrying but I’m even scared to get on it because everyone says that it will be harder when you try to get off it. I have been trying to deal with my panic attacks for years now and I think that now it has gotten worse because I totally obsess about it and I’m even scared to be by myself. I had blood work done a while ago and I was told everything is fine. I feel very guilty for wanting to take medication for my panic attacks. Is there anyone that can convince me otherwise? I have the medication and I dread taking it because I feel guilty but then again when I have a panic attack I take xanax which I also heard is bad to take because you can become addicted to it also. I thought of maybe trying to take some vitamins for nervousness and maybe like an herbal supplement for depression. I would like to get to the bottom of this and get answers as to why I get this way. I lost almost every job I had and when I’m home I get depressed and dread over it and I start panicking because I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’m working again and still under my 90 day period but I have a hard time concentrating on work and I was also get trained and I got very nervous every time I would make a mistake. I don’t know … I really want to medicate but not for long. Does this medication help you even after you stopped taking it?

You really need to be under the care of a good psychiatric nurse practitioner. Paxil did not agree with me. I was then put on Lexapro, as it has fewer problems associated with its use. I have taken Lexapro about three years. Occasionally I need a little more medication than what Lexapro provides, so I will add a small amount of Klonipin. I have had great success with these med. It will take several weeks for the Lexapro to help you, as it takes time to build up in your bloodstream, but the Klonipin will hold you steady until you are evened out. My very best wishes to you. Do not be afraid of the meds, they are a life saver in many lives. Never go cold turkey off any of these meds………you need help from a good professional.

Does anybody know any good coping mechanisms or ways of dealing with them as I am just fed up! They are getting in the way of my life.

i found the best help was seeing a cognitive behavioral specialist – if you haven’t looked into it yet – i highly recommend it. they help much more than a regular therapist. they will teach you exactly what a panic attack is and why it affects your mind and body the way it does. once your thoroughly educated – they are not so scary – then they will teach you ways to head them off and cope with them.

i get these attacks where i get so scared of a thought or i get stressed out and i feel like im about to vomit (i have actually vomited before) and i get so scared where i begin to shake and i literally have to do jumping jacks or talk myself out of it or something to take my mind off of it. they happen more at night and ive been getting them more and more often over the past months. usually i can just do deep breaths to calm my self but like 55% of the time end up crying…when i was young i had like one or 2 a month but they went away for years and now they are back and i don’t no if this is something i should treat with medication or not..anny ideas??

go see your doctor…sounds like you might need some medication
for anxiety/panic attacks…what you described is not normal.
if medication can help, why be miserable.

Hi, I am currently taking celexa 20 mg for panic attacks. I have been on it for about 6 months, but prior to that, I was on effexor xr for 8 months. Ever since I have started taking antidepressants, I have gained 20 pounds and I really don’t eat that much or even any different for that matter. I was wondering if anyone knows of one that does not cause weight gain. This extra weight has just added to my anxiety and lowered my self esteem so I am afraid to go off it because my panic attacks were really bad. Any advice from anyone with similar experience? Thanks to all

Hi,

First of all let me just say that I can totally understand what you are going through right now.
I had my first real anxiety/panic attack back in 2003. It was the single most frightening experience of my entire life! Fear, physical impairment and sense of impending death struck me like a sledgehammer. I couldn’t eat for almost 5 ays through worry and thought that was it.
My doc at the time gave me strong sedatives but they just made things worse once they wore off. He then tried me on all manner of anti depressants and sedatives which just made me a wreck (not to mention me visiting a and e in the meantime thinking I was mad).
I worked out that my job was the root cause of my problems allied with the lack of grieving I did when my father died 8 years previous.
"ok so now i’ve worked it out what do I do?"
Well the panic attacks were being as bad as ever (no sleep knotted stomach etc). I asked a former colleague of mine who had battled a heroin addiction to help me. He explained that he had used a meditation technique, improved his diet and exercised a little (nothing aggressive just gentle swimming) to combat his fears / demons.
Well before my episode I was a typical ‘Alpha Male’ will no interest in meditation whatsoever. And as for exercise well……
BUT I offset these doubts as they could be nothing compared to the fear I was experiencing on a daily basis.
With much trepidation I began…..slowly.
I took in some basic meditation literature, improved my diet and began to do very gentle exercise (walking in quiet parks etc)
And guess what?
I actually began to feel a little better. Not much just a little. So I stepped it up a gear. Slowly.
And guess what?
I felt better and stronger again. I repeated this set of techniques from that day to this and if it hadn’t been for my loving family and friends who knows where I would have ended up.
I used so many sites and books during that period it was hard to remember but the main guys who helped me (in 2005 I think??) were aid foundation. http://www.aidfoundation.com
They were pioneering some new techniques last time I checked and seemed quite impressive.
Anyways, best of luck. I have two phrases that my wife used to repeat to me on an almost daily basis when it got bad:
Tomorrow is another day
There is no fear but fear itself.

p.s. If I was in the middle of the most horrific outdoor episode I started to imagine everyone I saw as babies playing in a nursery with building blocks!! It kind of helped

Unfortunately, yes. Particularly the 2-4 weeks after you begin medication. Some anxiety sufferers have reported their symptoms are even worse than before during this time.

If you’ve been taking the medication beyond 6 weeks and you’re still not feeling better than before, you should consider letting your doctor/psychiatrist know. S/he may discuss a different medication with you.

Sadly, it’s rare that anxiety and/or depression sufferers will recover completely from their affliction via medication alone, although a combination of therapy and medication can produce a full recovery, or remission.
