I’m a college student and it’s finals week and I’ve been really stressed and depressed lately. Long story short yesterday night my friend and I stayed up to finish up some assignments and I was out of it. My friend was trying to calm me because she knew I had a lot on my plate but it didn’t help. The next thing I know I’m crying about a paper I couldn’t start and then my eyes began to roll behind my head and I was hyperventilating. My friend freaked out and called 911 and the RA on our floor, I was shaking like I had Parkinson disease. Once the ambulance came I denied the offer to get help I was sure I will be fine and I really did not want to miss my final. So the ambulance leaves and my friend was upset because she knows I really needed to see someone. During the time they left I had two episodes with my eyes rolling around but my body did give out on me so my RA called 911 again. The only thing I could think about was all the assignments I’m gonna miss out on and again I had an episode only this time I was scared. I couldn’t breathe after a while, my body felt so weak and I was blacking out. I had to hold on to every little ounce of energy I still had in me, it felt like I was dying literally. This could have just been paranoia that scared me. Sorry for the long story this was my first time rushed to a hospital and having a severe panic/mental breakdown.

You answered your own question in the last sentence. If you think you had a panic attack. You did. I can relate. I’m in college and I’m having finals too. Just try to take breaks when doing assignments, and don’t stay up so late, sleep deprivation could make things worse.

With your eyes rolling back in your head, I’d almost say you had a seizure caused by your stress/ panic attack. I wouldn’t say it was a mental breakdown, but more of a panic induced episode. There are lots of cases where perfectly normal people get bogged down by so much stress that they have seizures or extreme cases of panic attacks. I would personally go see a doctor because it can be a very traumatic and dangerous thing, but most likely only a result of your stress. If I were you, I’d try some breathing techniques or yoga to calm yourself down and maybe that will work. Even if it’s not a serious issue, it’s best to find your comfort zone (maybe a favorite food or music) and not worry so much about classes. If it is hindering your ability to study and write papers, email your teacher(s) and let them know the circumstances of your situation. They will usually help you out or give you an Incomplete on your final which will give you at least a month to finish.

If 911 has been called because of your reaction to stress, that’s good enough to count as an excuse for an extension. Take care of yourself first, and worry about school second. Your teachers will understand (believe me, I’ve had to cancel exams the day before because of kidney stones and an appendicitis and the teachers were more concerned about my well being than the test.)
