DO you guys think the world should have a better understanding of panic disorders/attacks?

I’ve been suffering panic attacks for 6 years now, but i never realized that i might actually have a panic disorder, until i looked at a website called beyond blue. I’m going to visit my school chaplain to talk about my issues somewhere in the near future.
But i never realized there even was such a thing as panic disorders- i always thought i was the only one who suffered like that. Also, i don’t think that my parents would understand if i told them about my problems. They probably also have no idea about anxiety disorders.
What do you guys reckon? Do you think the world should be given better education on panic disorders or panic attacks?

yes, there should definitely be more education. A lot of people still think that a panic attack is when you lose your car keys and are late for work or something! A panic attack is much, much more frightening than that. I have had attacks for 28 years, and was agoraphobic (housebound) for at least 12 years. Because there is so little understanding of it, I am very embarrassed to have an attack in front of people in case they think I am crazy or mad, so I will avoid situations or drink alcohol (not a good idea, ended up alcoholic). Ironically, I prefer to be seen as a drunk, rather than a weirdo. I can’t go on planes at all – some people keep telling me that I must have had a traumatic experience on a plane – it isn’t that it is the overwhelming fear of not being able to escape the situation. Refusal to give tranquillizers early on in my illness did not help – that’s why I turned to alcohol – a far worse, and more harmful addiction. Panic disorder is very, very common and it should have more attention given to it. I am glad you found the beyond blue site.

yes, people should be informed.
i have a panic disorder that whenever i become too stressed/mad/sad/scared, i get what feels like shocks to my heart. People need to understand that panic disorders don’t only effect a person mentally but physically too.

Ask your doc about Inderal it is a beta blocker that blocks the effects of the adrenaline which your adrenal glands secrete, this is where the panic attack comes from as far as the physical symptoms go. If you think people are ignorant about panic disorders now could you imagine living back in the 1920′s or even the 60′s.
