Does this mean Im bipolar?
so at first my friends would joke with me saying omg ur so bipolar jus because one minute i’d be starving and willing to eat anything and within the next 30 seconds id change my mind & not have an appetite at all
thats just a minor example. Well recently ive noticed that i can be a really fun happy social person, with confidence & a brilliant mind but every once in a while (about 2 months in duration) id get really really depressed and anxious and have trouble socializing and have panic attacks and act like a totally different person. My mood will just flip on me and its scarey.. its mmessing with my life.it causes me to have social phobia, and makes it hard for me to joke and think of come backs & its just flat out uncomfortable embarrasing & horrible summed up into one. It ruined my prom. a nite ur sposed 2 remember for the rest of ur life is the nite i want to forget for the rest of my life, jus cuz i had this extreme nervousness that wouldnt go away. if this isnt bipolar wut is it?
I am currently diagnosed as bi-polar. Don’t let your friends diagnose you, leave that to a professional.
Mood swings can be caused by many things…bi-polar is just one of them. Hormones being out of balance is another possibility. Even something as simple as a food allergy can cause mood swings in some people.
Don’t take my word for it…visit your doctor for a thorough psychiatric exam. You may learn something about yourself that helps you in life.

First of all, don’t worry too much about prom night–I think proms are really overrated. I didn’t really enjoy mine at all; it was all hyped up and then we got there and it was actually pretty lame. It’s hardly essential.
Also, it could be that you do have bipolar disorder–but I wouldn’t listen to the jokes your friends crack about this. Bipolar disorder is a very serious diagnosis, not really something to be joked about. My guess is that you probably just have normal teenager stress issues–everybody gets them. You can talk to a counselor if you think it’s really serious. But don’t worry just because your friends are joking about it!

I wouldn’t see a doctor. I don’t believe in "mental illness". There are better ways to cope than seeing a psychiatrist and being medicated. Trust me, I have been diagnosed with bipolar, but am off medication now. Follow your instincts – they are there for a good reason. If something is bothering you, get some space and distance from the problem. If you are hungry, eat. If you are not hungry, don’t eat. It sound like you just might be more sensitive than your average person. Don’t let anyone put some label on you. If someone tells you you are crazy, stick up for yourself. You are not bipolar, you are an intelligent young lady.

It could just be the age you are at and being uncomfortable, extra sensitive to remarks made by friends. It could be something else. You might want to start by seeing about getting connected to a therapist who can talk with you (someone qualified to do psychotherapy- your parents could help you find a credentialed person and then you stay only if after a few sessions you feel a connection and believe they are helpful to you.) It could be they would refer you to a doctor (psychiatrist) but a Psychiatrist’s job is to look for a condition to decide what medication to give you.
If therapy is enough to help out, then that may be the better course. A good therapist will refer you to a doctor if they think you need to see one or if you say you think you need to.
