General anxiety disorder and alcohol?
I have a GAD that I’m on medication for. I used to drink more often a few years ago with no issues, and I’ve also checked with my doctor to make sure alcohol consumption was ok. I’ve been given the green light. My friend is planning on taking me out for my birthday, and I’m worried that the alcohol is going to cause me to have a panic attack since I’m not used to consuming it. Any way to avoid this?
Please don’t say something like "Well don’t drink then".
Try a test run – tonight or tomorrow night or whatever, try drinking as much as you plan on drinking when you go out (though I would advise planning on stopping before you’re very drunk though, obviously…).
That way, you will reassure yourself that you won’t have a problem.
Good luck, and happy early birthday!

If you have any doubts, why jeopardize your life for a few drinks???

Okay I won’t say don’t drink then because that would be an obvious answer. Drinking for fun should be just that. Fun. It should relax you and help you to more easily enjoy yourself. If you are so sure you have to drink to have a good time then take it slow. Sip your drinks and make them last and see how you are feeling with it. Order non-alcoholic drinks if you are only worried about appearance. Have a "Virgin" Mary instead of a bloody mary, Margurita’s without the alcohol still taste good and look like you are having a drink. Beer? There are plenty of non-alcoholic beers on the market that taste fine. I know I am a sober alcoholic. If I am in a situation where having a "drink" for appearances is called for those are the options I use. I also suggest (if you don’t want to drink, but "fit in") be the designated driver. Have fun and don’t do ANYTHING you aren’t comfortable with just to please someone else!

Well don’t drink then. Sometimes we need to hear what we don’t want to hear.
