I have Panic Attacks a lot lately. Mostly in drivers Ed. I don’t know why but my mind reacts badly to stupid little things like blood and death and car accidents. THings that never bothered me before. Now i am scared of having them and it is getting worse. What to do!

I already talked to a older person and they said to go get help from a legit counselor that specializes in that. BUt i don’t want anyone to really know.

Dealing with panic attacks is always scary and it sucks. I know, i used to get them all the time and still do. I even went to the hospital because of one, and nothing was wrong. I know people say try not to think of it because it will make it worse but you cant help it. Sometimes nothing I think of will replace it. What I would do is "try" and think rationally. Pray. Sit down and take some deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. I go to a counselor…. It might help it might not. I wouldnt take pills though if you do get help. But practice deep breathing and realize that your fine and nothing is going to happen. Sometimes getting fresh air helps and being around someone you love helps a lot. But for me it was a lot of prayer. I hope your panic attacks go away, i’ll pray for you.

Panic attacks are a result of your body reacting normally to your mind reacting irrationally to a stimulus/trigger otherwise not harmful but that you think is harmful. The shortness of breath, increased heart rate, dizziness, etc. are all signs that your body is preparing to fight or flight over something your brain is telling it is a threat to your life. They can be chronic and pervasive, but therapy has shown to effectively reduce their occurrence. As this "older" person said, you would probably benefit from psychotherapy, but that is your decision.

I’m curious to know why you don’t want to seek treatment. As a mental health provider, myself, I know that the stigma of therapy is pretty strong in deterring people from otherwise seeking help. But it is important for you know the facts about mental health treatment. It sounds like you are under 18 or 17, so your parents would need to be involved in setting up your treatment, but therapy is confidential in nature so that ONLY you, your parents, and your therapist (or insurance company if you don’t private pay) would know about your treatment. Check out apa.org to get a better understanding of what psychologists can offer. Keep an open mind.

Here’s a little tip. I have panic disorder and I always wear a rubber band around my wrist and anytime I start to panic I snap it. It’s not really the best answer but the pain gets my mind off the panic. But have you tried asking your teacher if maybe you could step out during anything involving crashes? I had to tell my teachers about panic attacks, and they’re surprisingly understanding. Panic Attacks are not an Act, and they can be quite scary. But if this consists you should see a doctor. I hope I helped. Best of luck.

Advice from a clinical psychologist is to breathe in to the count of 3: (one thousand one; one thousand two; one thousand three) each takes around a second to say to yourself, in your mind, and out to the count of 3. Read: "Power Over Panic", by Bronwyn Fox, from your bookstore, or enter "panic attacks" in the searchbar at Amazon.com for more media.

View http://deeplyrelax.com & http://www.deepsloweasy.com/html/intro.htm Note: the controlled breathing only helps with the symptoms, as do medications/herbal remedies. Address the underlying cause, which requires some form of therapy; see your-mental-health.8m.com, below, re anxiety, on pages H, & I. Imagine that the cause of your panic; your anxieties, fears, your self doubts, self recriminations, all the agonizing "I’m-so-Stupids"; every painful "I-can’t-do-it" are huge raging, hurtful bulls snorting and charging at you. You see them coming at you and you hold out your red matador’s cape at arms length and simply let them charge right by. Every time they come at you, hold out your arm with the red cape and let them rage and snort and go right on past. Some people recommend nettle tea, with a little honey. Others use Lavender tea, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, but use no milk or cream with herbal teas, or Valerian (caution: use it for 3 weeks at most!). Know how these affect you before driving, or doing anything dangerous, and it is far better to use the treatments, rather than relying on herbal remedies. Free online PANIC COURSE – http://www.panic-attacks.co.uk also available by email. See the section on panic attacks at http://www.mind.org.uk also Ebooklet form. They recommend letting a panic attack run its course, without doing anything to treat it, so you KNOW you will survive it. The usual maximum is 30 minutes, until symptoms begin to subside.
