How can I control these panic attacks?

I have had panic attacks for about 10 years, they have been really few and far between, but I have avoided the situations that seem to trigger them.
I have recently changed my job though, and as a result I find my self having to face these situations!!

I usually start with a really dry mouth, and start to feel faint and light headed. And really really hot when In fact I am told I look like death warmed up. This lasts for about 10 minutes and I have to get out of the room and usually need to lie down!

really embarrassing!

Can anyone offer any help as it is beginning to take over my life!

I suffered from panic attacks daily and did not know what to do. When it was finally diagnosed my life became much more manageable. Panic attacks totally disrupted my life for over a decade. I had to take medication but I was OK with that. It gave me my life back. I was at the point where I would not go to places like parties, long rides etc. I would make up excuse after excuse. You can beat this but you are going to need some help. Don’t go it alone. Panic attacks are much more prevalent then people think. I am convinced at least in my case that it is hereditary. I found out my grandmother had what they think was a panic disorder. They did not know too much about panic disorders back then and she was labeled a hypochondriac. Poor woman hardly ever left her house. My Aunt suffered from them and this past summer my 19 year old son started having them. He is lucky, he lives with a professional on panic attacks. One thing I want you to remember. I had thousands of panic attacks and NOTHING ever happened. NOTHING, I cannot stress that enough. All that worrying and wasted energy and years of my life ,,,,wasted. I did that to myself and so will you only if you let it. I have not had one for a very long time. Get off that merry go round now. Its a waste of valuable time and energy. I guarantee you will beat this. As I stated , nothing ever happens. If you ever need me I do not mind if you contact me. I hate to see anyone live like this when they really do not have to. I would be more then glad to help you. God Bless (NOTHING EVER HAPPENS)

I suffered a lot from this too. I went to go see my doctor who gave me a referral to a type of psychologist. We worked gradually on things that triggered my attacks like heights for example. I would start by looking at a picture. Once I was comfortable, I would watch a movie about heights. From then on, I would progress until I was able to walk across a bridge happily.

Panic attacks can be extremely serious and vary from one person to another. Many things trigger them and some are worse than others. They appear in many forms under mental health issues and the proper diagnosis needs to be done by someone who knows what he’s doing. I would suggest you consult a doctor to get the proper medication for yours.

I work as a medical assistant in a family practice and I get to train people to overcome panic attacks almost every day. Panic attacks are almost completely conquererable if someone knows what to do. This is what you should do, I promise, it works!

Obviously, avoiding situations that cause them is the best way to go. But, when you feel one coming on, focus your thoughts completely on your breathing. Focus on breathing normal, in and out, not too fast, and not too big and deep. Get your breathing under control first and then think about a happy memory, like a trip with your family, or a dream that you have. Basically, change your thoughts away from whatever is causing it. You can litteraly bring your heartbeat down a lot just by thinking about lowering it.

Once you have your thoughts under control, get a drink of water and keep breathing normal. If you can, go for a quick little walk, even if it’s just around your work place. Think happy things, do something nice for someone else, and smile! I promise, if you do these things, especially the breathing and focusing on your heartbeat, with happy thoughts, you’ll beat the attack every time. Eventually you’ll do these things automatically and these attacks will not be a part of your life. Good luck, and best wishes to you!

Hey there,

I have Panic disorder for more than 12 years already and my condition has been improving a lot! My medication started from 20mg per day till just 10mg on alternate days (or just 5mg per day) – I even thought of quitting medication. I also realized that there are many others who have Panic Attacks out there and I decided to reach out and help them.

So I have started a blog to give free panic attack tips and techniques that have helped me for all these years:
http://PanicAttackResearch.blogspot.com

I do hope it will help you all =)

With Regards,
Seng
