have been having panic attacks a lot in the past few weeks, more than I used to and they are getting really scary. I get them a lot when I’m driving in the car. Sometimes I think I should just pull over but then my mind races even more and for some reason I get worried if I dont have another driver in the car that would be able to take over driving for me. I used to get them at school but only when I had to read out loud. Now I get them more than ever. Last night I was out on a date and I got one just sitting there during the movie and I just tried taking deep breaths but i kept thinking it was making it worse. and during church today I felt like I was about to get one. I dont know what to do about it anymore. I dont really have money or insurance to see a dr about this. Isthere anything I can do to calm myself? please help! I’m 19, if that makes a difference. and Im not really worried about anything in life in general. when it happens i ask myself why im i scared. help
i really dont wanna go and take meds. and also i am on albuterol inhaler. is this making it worse? should i stop using my inhaler?
in my question i said with med. i meant WITHOUT MED. ive heard stories that its not good for u and stuff.

I am with you on the no meds thing… here is my trick… find some prase that you can repeat over and over in your head. usually my panic attacks make things feel so fast and out of control and sends my thoughts racing through my head… I found a song from some kids show – lamb chop..

this is the song that doesn’t end yes it goes on and on my friend some people started singing it not knowing what it was and they’ll continue singing it for ever just because this is the song that doesn’t end yes it goes on and on…. repeat whats above…

I have a med that I can take that desolves under the toung that works quick if I can’t get it to stop.

concentrate on something else to get your mind off of it

there is no way right at this time that you can get over this without meds, be glad we live in a era were there are meds available that can help us, 80 years ago we would have been but in a institution for life, remember meds are for short time to help you not for ever.

Medication IS good for you. I am living proof. I suffered from schizophrenia, major depression and panic attacks. Today thanks to my medication my symptoms are in remission for 4 years now. But I will have to be on meds the rest of my life.

For panic attacks, I take Ativan 2 mg. and it works great. I tried everything before taking the meds – exercise, prayer, positive thinking, deep breathing, herbs, etc. and nothing worked. You can’t expect them to go away without meds. That’s what they make them for. People like you and me.

I have to agree with the other person who has said that you need medications to help deal with anxiety. Anxiety is usually caused by a chemical change in your brain and emotional reasons. If you are in college than go to the college infirmary and they should be able to help you. They should also be able to help you get a way of paying for your treatment and medications.. You need to get help so that you’ll be able to fell better and to do well in school.

I find that it’s very hard when you’re having a panic attack to stop it. Mine typically loop around for hours rather than the usual 10 minutes or so and now i’m on two types of meds usually given to epilepsy patients that are supposed to knock me unconscious whenever I have an attack.

The easiest method for me is to avoid them, by discovering what your triggers are, and either trying to over come that fear or by avoiding the type of situation all together. As far as when you’re having the attack, being with other people helps me a lot. Whether i’m on the phone, the computer or there in person, so long as there’s someone there that will assure me nothing will happen, I calm down eventually..

Just be careful not to hyperventilate too much and breathe into a paper bag if you have to. Too much oxygen can make it worse.
