I’m 24 yrs old and have been dealing with anxiety and panic attacks since I was in high school. for the longest time I tried dealing with it myselft, but I just keep getting worse. I finally went to the dr. and he diagnosed me with generalized anxiety and panic attacks. He first put me on zoloft but the side effects were horrible so I stopped taking it. He has now prescribed my lexapro, but I’m scared to take it because of my exprience with zoloft. Has anyone else tried lexapro? what was your experience with it? Also, besides medication, how do you deal with panic attacks in public and while you’re at work?

Lexapro is a SSRI antidepressant like Zoloft. But just because Zoloft did not work does not mean Lexapro will not. Also, it is very common to have side effects for the first few weeks. And the side effects can include an increase in anxiety and depression. Lexapro is the most prescribed drug in America and clinical studies have shown it to be the best antidepressant (for most people). I would really talk to your doctor about adding an adjacent benzodiazepine to the Lexapro. Taking a benzo with an antidepressant has several good points. Firstly, a benzo will typically reduce or eliminate any side effects the drug can initially cause. Also, benzo’s provide immediate relief of anxiety so you can get through the next few weeks. And hopefully the Lexapro will be working and the benzo’s will not be needed. Also, sometimes a benzo is prescribed (even after an antidepressant is working) to take as need should you have an occasional panic attack. Lastly, Xanax (alprazolam) is the ideal medication to take during the initial stages of antidepressant use. Xanax, along with Clonazepam (Klonopin/Rivotril) are the only benzo’s approved for panic. But I think Xanax does a better job in this situation. It also happens to have a mild antidepressant effect, which no other benzo has.

Good luck

Welcome to the very unpleasant club of panic attack sufferers.

Lexapro had only very short lived side effects for me (first two weeks = tired and some jaw clenching) but then it was fine.

At work I have (in my purse) "emergency" meds that you should ask your doc for. Something small dose but effective like Xanax or Klonopin – that will help till the Lex takes full hold (about 3 months).

You will get through it. In public, just remember you are on of every 5 people who has panic attacks – so it’s not JUST you! You’ll make it. Comfort yourself with thoughts of things that are special and relaxing to you. Take care of yourself and try meditation/prayer – prayer helped me considerably.

Takes time, but honestly, it’ll get better. Don’t be afraid of the medications – it’s better than suffering or self medicating with pot or alcohol.

Take care!

I am like you, very sensitive to anti depressants, butI personally didn’t like lexapro, it made me spacey! My doctor put me on celexa a couple weeks ago and I have not had any side effects from it, except yawning. I have yet to overcome my anxiety in public! I have to take the 1/2 mg lorazepams aday along with 20 mg of celexa to deal with my anxiety. My doc said that when the celexa gets in my system I won’t need the lorazepam. I wish you the best of luck and trust me you are not the only one out there with panic attacks.
