i had a bad episode of an anxiety/panic attack at work yesterday, i took rivortil and that did nothing to help calm me and i ended up in the occupational health nurses office and being collected by my husband, me still in a right state. the nurse told me to go to my GP and get something more effective that the rivitril to be kept in the medical office at work for future use, should i have an attack as bad again. my GP gave me Xanax.
does it work well and calms you etc? any advice from other users or ex-users of Xanax is appreciated. the dose is the 0.5mg tablet by the way.
thanks in advance for any answers

Yes xanax works greatly. .5 is a strong enough dosage that shouldnt cause much of a dependency. Just dont use it over and over every single day, only use it when you need it know what i mean? It worked for me but i became addicted and overdosed. So be careful. Good luck

If you’re really struggling, I would recommend some Valium to calm you down initially. You won’t, however, be able to function properly.

But drugs are really not the answer. You will need to learn to cope with your anxiety, that means: Sit through your attacks. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.

I know from experience that this is very difficult to do but you must. There is no other way around it.

I personally stopped taking Valium very quickly as its effects, same as with other drugs that tend to alter perception, made my anxiety even worse.

I once suffered from a panic attack that lasted a full hour, and the only solution was to try and fall asleep where I was. Worked like a charm.

I’ve had a year and a half of constant anxiety and panic but have defeated it by not relying on drugs but relying on people who I trust, six months of therapy and just learning that a panic attack is nothing but a response to a non-existent threat and can not physically harm you.

Just go with it, you’ll be fine. :)

I have suffered with severe anxiety and panic attacks for years. Years ago I was taking Xanax, until it finally stopped working for me. SInce then, I have used Diazepam (valium) which has also helped. There are so many sedatives on the market today, that you may have to try a few until you find the one that really works for you.

Make an appoimtment with a doctor and tell him your concerns. He will want to monitor your medication and help you in finding an effective one for you. Also, he will want to make sure you do not become addicted to them.

If you experience a panic attack, and do not have a sedative readily to take… try doing deep breathing. Inhale all the way to your stomach until your stomach rises. Then exhale slowly. Continue doing this until you feel relaxed. It is a known fact that deep breathing will definitely relax the mind.

Good luck!

Valium works pretty well for me, and doesn’t have any side effects like disorientation for me either. You could get some just to keep in your bag for emergencies, and this in itself is a good prop – just knowing you have them. Obviously you know they’re addictive but if you only use them very occasonally it shouldn’t be a problem :)
