I have been feeling depressed by what i went through and have overwhelming anxiety at times. Until now i had never had these types of feelings.

As hard as it is, you have to not allow things to get out of proportion. A panic attack won’t kill you. I know, when I was having panic attacks, that I thought I was going to die. That’s just what it feels like when it’s happening, but panic attacks won’t kill you. No matter how bad you feel – just remember that it will pass and you will survive and it’s not your fault. You aren’t weak or stupid. It’s just a medical condition and it’s one that you can overcome.

Find coping strategies and study techniques, if you google it, you’ll find loads.

One thing that helped me was walking my dog. I used to panic when I was walking down the street on my own, and I used to panic that people were staring at me or that I was ugly and that everyone was looking at me and thinking how ugly I was or something.

But I started taking (my parents) dog out with me when I went out and when the panic was starting I used to bend over and pet the dog and talk to him and it was like I was drawing attention away from myself, which made me feel better.

My thing was that other people could see that I was anxious and panicking and when I’m concentrating on the dog then I felt like they didn’t notice that my hands were shaking or that I was avoiding eye-contact with them.

It doesn’t have to be a dog, it can be a newspaper or something. Just something to pay attention to you so that you can compose yourself without letting anyone else see that you’re feeling anxious.

Please do google, panic attacks, or anxiety attacks. You’ll find lots of coping strategies to get you through this.

And Good luck. You’re obvously intelligent and determined to help yourself or you wouldn’t have asked this question in the first place.

You take care… :)

I’ve had several panic attacks before, and while your having them it is best to lay down and breathe…if your having them often i would suggest seeing a doctor and he can put you on medication that will help…however anxiety medication is extremely addictive so i wouldn’t reccomend it unless your getting panic attacks very frequently. Otherwise i would just stay away from things with high caffiene and after your panic attacks just lay down and try to relax.

the trick to remember is that NO ONE is really thinking about you as much as you think they are.

you might re play things in your head, but others don’t.

I highly recommend yoga, or getting out and exercise.

I hope you feel better soon.

Good question! I hope you feel better – I know how you feel as I’ve had some very bad panic attacks. I would highly suggest cognitive behavioral therapy. They help you relax and teach you ways to cope in times of deep distress. If you don’t do this, I’d highly suggest to see a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist can prescribe you antidepressants/antipsychotic medications. Also, you need to do yourself a favor. If you go to school, take a week off. If you go to work, take a personal leave. I would highly recommend that you do either or all of these things.

Feel better!

Fear is the same as a fire alarm – it lets you know when there is danger. Just like when your toaster sets off the alarm the danger is not always real. You have to find out why you are frightened of the things you are and decide if they are genuine or not. If they aren’t then you need to accept the situation.

The worst thing you could possibly do is to take pills or try to alleviate the symptoms. It is the cause you need to address.

No one knows exactly what it feels like unless you go through it.
Anxiety can be very scarey, especialy when you are alone.
It’s not something that you get over in a day or two. I finally got
the right meds from my Doc and I am coping much better than I
did 2 yrs ago. At least now I can more or less talk myself out of
going over the edge. Anyway, the way it was explained to me was,
there is two parts of what you are going through. One is the
depression, which for me is controlled by Wellbutrin. The panic attacks can be controlled by paxile. At least that combo works
for me. Just talk with your doctor. Please don’t put it off to long.
Take are.

Start by slowing down your breathing some. Sit down and concentrate on breathing in & out. Put on the TV or radio if you find the noise comforting. Consider calling a family member or friend who is familiar with your depression. Try talking a walk or just writing down all your feelings. If you don’t want to go outside then try to do something productive around the house. You can take on a cleaning project to work off the excess energy & accomplish something at the same time. Some people find a hot bath or shower relaxing. If you feel safer just sitting, then just sit. Wrap a blanket around yourself & say a little prayer. If you need to cry, go ahead. Let out the emotion. Avoid caffeinated beverages and smoking if possible. Realize that the attack is over and that you are safe & OK now.

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called "St John’s Wort" – it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior – Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

I know it must have been terrifying to go through this. I think you are doing the right thing, though, trying to get more information about it in order to prepare for the next time. I recently posted some tips over on my blog — take a look, I think they will help:
