i have been taking panic attacks for over 2 years now and its always when im stressed at work but over the last 4 days they have been coming constantly i even went to the hospital as they got that bad. i am so afraid of dying and everything i look at seems to mention dying. how am i ever going to overcome this fear? and will it always be on my mind?

You’re half way to answering your question. You’ve already identified the stress trigger (realization of death) and where the problem resides ("will it always be on my mind?"). Here are 2 techniques that could help you.

1.Thought blocking – as soon as a death-related thought arises, stop and focus on something else and don’t look back
2.Cognitive restructuring – identifying stressful/anxious thought patterns and changing them to lead away from stress

Since death is THE most stress-inducing subject a person can face, you should face it gradually, taking it on step by step. You have you’re entire life to get ready for this event.

By the way, I know how you feel. I’m currently dealing with the fact I will die, and since I don’t believe in an afterlife, I have to come to grips with the fact that my consciousness will end at death and I have no idea what that is going to feel like. I can’t fathom absolute nothingness and I bet that’s what scares you too.

You have to accept that fact that death is a part of life. Live your life well, be happy, and don’t wait for death to happen.

I know how you feel. Panic attacks are no fun at all, but I’ve found that going to a good therapist can really help. They can teach you ways to overcome your panic and even ways to prevent attacks. The therapist may even be able to prescribe you some medicine to take to help you calm down. The point is, there is help to be had if you are willing to seek it. You don’t have to live with panic attacks forever. Also, next time you are having an attack remember to breathe deep…and keep concentrating on your breathing. It really helps. Good luck!

i am the same way. i have real bad panic attacks. i am also afraid of dying. but alas it is something that will happen to all of us eventually. i have been reading the news about the Swine Flu and how many people it has affected and died from it , specially small children , i have 2 boys. so yes my panic attacks and thinking that the world is going to end with this pandemic. i dont really know what the future holds but i am a VERY protective mother and want to make sure i can at least live a long prospering life with my children. i pray to God everyday that this will happen. the best thing i have found for me not to worry about dying is DO NOT read negative articles, hard as it seems it does work. go see a couselor about you’re problems, take some Anxiety medicines like Lorazepam, it helps with the mind and calms it down. i take it now when i have anxiety i.e. panic attacks and it seems to help tremendously. i have had this fear of dying since last year , i had twin boys that lived for 6 hours but also dying , the hospital wouldnt do anything for them. and i think that did something to me to be very much afraid of death. alot of people say not to be afraid of death. i not sure if its death itself but how i am going to die is the main thing. i dont want to suffer or anyone else for that matter as my twins did. they breathed and cried for 6 hours on their own with no other help and i felt so helpless. then they died the next morning. you may have it on you’re mind the rest of you’re life, but i hope that it doesnt overcome you’re daily way of life. just live life to the fullest and have fun much as you can. stay clear of negative things such as the media or news… go seek a psychologist they can help you much better and get you on the road to recovery so that you can live a wonderful life with out thinking about it all the time
