I need remedies for my agoraphobia (fear of crowds/panic in groups)?
Has anyone found a great tool for easing the distressing symptoms of agoraphobia?
I thought I had willed away my agoraphobia, but a couple weeks ago, I went to my friend’s baby shower and found myself freezing up, hyperventilating or shaking mildly, and staying to myself. I feel like I’m having an extremely long panic attack, when that happens.
I seem to waiver between being a very outgoing person, and clamming up. I think I clam up when I’m thrown into a situation where I’m out of my comfort zone. I didn’t know anyone there, except for my friend, but she was busy entertaining 35 people, so it was a little awkward.
Does anyone have any remedies for this?
I have another baby shower coming up, but I just don’t think I can do it.
BTW, I diagnosed myself with agoraphobia. I’ve never been to any kind of therapist for that or anything else.
Due to panic attacks (mostly work related), I was first diagnosed by a doctor, with Panic Disorder. Later on, I was diagnosed differently by a new doctor, with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
I was prescribed Clonapin in both instances, but I only take it when I really need it, because I hate taking medicine, and I can’t take it when I’ll be consuming alcohol, so at big events, I just try to grin and bear it.
Thanks S.H.
I do feel like they’re all judging me.
I always feel like the ugly kid at school, only
school is long passed and I know I’m not ugly.
Sometimes I will feel this panic all day, unless I force myself to look in the mirror and see that I’m not ugly. Usually though, it’s in crowds.
I will try that. Thank you so much ![]()
What is it about crowds, exactly, that causes you fear? Is it that you think they might all be judging you?
If so, think of them not as people with leering eyes, but merely as other humans just like you, with beating hearts and breathing lungs. Just another organism on this planet that has no investment in your doings or interest in your actions.
