I am now petrified that my agent will get rid of me as I am obviously unable to continue this job,and feel completely guilty that I have let the other actors down.I am disgusted and ashamed of myself.Could anyone please give me some advice as I feel so lost and lonely ,many thanks.

Your health is more important than your job. And it is your health that is an issue now.
So get down and see your doctor right away and get treatment for the problem, probably involving medication.
Explain this to your agent. If he/she doesn’t like it then allow them to fire you. But do not apologise. You can always get another acting job, but you can’t always get another health.

You feeling ashamed and disgusted is likely to be a symptom of depression, so I would disregard it.
Take SSRI antidepressants – they really work (for most people).
Good luck.

Get a shrink. You have anxiety issues. It’s not normal for someone to have panic attacks with suicidal tendencies.
If you can’t put up with pressure then you should reconsider your career.

I’d first go see someone. That always is a sign of someone trying to rectify a wrong. Also – as a person who suffers from panic attacks, why did you want take an OD? Most people with panic don’t want to die. Could you also have some depression issues. Seek help – that would be my advice.

Become an accountant or an independant financial advisor.

A career in banking or finance is very exciting (Mr Pewtey).

You were just getting anxious over your new role, many people get anxiety attacks, seek help, you need to go to anxiety management course, your doctor will be able to help you.

Don’t despair, hopefully with help, you will control these anxiety attacks.

Disregard the shame…no need for that. Can you go to the director on the set? Tell him your issues? Work something out so that u r still involved in the project but not in the same role?? Can u b a stage hand so that u can observe how others r handling the stress of the job? Don’t throw in the towel…use it!

Learn and practice the method at http://deeplyrelax.com & practice for 20 mins daily, and when needed, the method at http://www.selfhelpmagazine.com Meditation room; try it out; mantra meditation; repeat the word: "easy". Ensure you know your lines. Phone your agent and advise of the steps you are taking to overcome this problem. Repeat your chosen word or short phrase in your mind, while using the breathing method, just before you are on.

Hi there, just first of all want to say ‘well done’ for having he courage to ask this question. It shows that you have realised that you have a problem and want to do something about it.

DON’T GIVE UP YOUR JOB

Anxiety and panic attacks can be managed, so you shouldn’t need to give up a job at the first sign of problems.

You need to go and see your GP, be honest and explain what happened. Hopefully you will find one that has a good understanding of mental health problems and will have some good advice and treatment for you.

If you can look back on the panic attacks and try to pinpoint what set them off, if there were any particular triggers, this will help your GP. Has this ever happened before when you’ve been acting? Is it a particularly demanding role? Is there some reason you felt uncomfortable, other members of the cast, or problems with the director or producer? Anything at all, not matter how small it may seem – because obviously something caused you to be so stressed.

Secondly, try and talk to your agent. Tell him you know you need to get help and support, and that you are doing that – you don’t have to go into detail, but I would think that he will appreciate your honesty, and that he will see that you are addressing the problem. I’m pretty sure there must be lots of other actors out there who also suffer.

See if there is a local Mind organisation/charity in your area. They offer a great service. They are non-judgemental, can offer support, help, guidance, and they are not scary health professionals.

The National Mind website is

http://www.mind.org.uk

and it has lots of information on all kinds of mental health problems, which you can read online, or download. It also explains different types of treatment available.

Don’t despair.

Please seek some professional help and advice.

Trust me, I too suffer from mental ill health.

Hope you are fully recovered from the overdose, and feeling a little bit more hopeful.

Help is available, please get some before you find yourself doing something else that is harmful to you.

Good luck and all the best for your future.

You will have to try and get to the bottom of why you were so traumatised by your job to take an overdose?
Was it live theatre?
Would you prefer film?
Or was it the play? Was the subject matter to heavy? Did it bring up past issues?
Only you will know – so do some soul searching. Then see if it can be fixed!
We all have some sort of neurosis in our personalities – so turn it around and make it a positive!
Try to look on the bright side. You are here and willing to try again! So go for it!

I fell down because I thought I have to do it all by myself. We all fall. Give thanks you did not lose your life and start reaching out.
Fact is you are probably not suffering from a major mental illness, simply you have thrown yourself into the fire and got burned.
The wings will grow back. Take heed of who was there for you and next time try holding hands.

You poor thing I know how you feel I suffer from them to, there harmless really but at the time you feel like your going to die, it sounds like a nerves (stage fright) have been the cause, the secret is learning to control them i ve tried medication it didint help i know its a cliche but its the breathing thing that helps take a deep breath not through your stomach through your chest feel the air fill up in your lungs then take a slow breath out keep practising or try the paper bag method covering your nose and mouth with the bag and breathing in and out helping restore the oxygen to your body. You ve had a bad experience try and put it behind you and concentrate on entertaining your public, confide in a family member and maybe ask if they could accompany you for a bit of moral support it helps having someone with you, I have also found getting a pen and paper and writing down my worries then reading back over them helps as sometimes on paper they dont seem like such a big deal, you ve lucky to have a job you enjoy so learn to relax and go and enjoy ! check out nopanic website on the internet and talk to others that have been through it, if you need to chat e mail me good luck
