She said that medication can play tricks on me like play with my mind & possible make me worst? How can that be when their made to HELP people iff thats the case im going to stop taking them cause i also heard this someone along the lines ages ago too can someone please explain to me what people exactly meen when they say medication can do this to people i dont get it?

Thanks.

First off keep this in mind:
1)They are literally mind altering drugs. That is what they are used for.
2)They do not solve your mental problems- only you can do that. They simply mask them.

Now the big question- what chemical did your psych guess was imbalanced? What is he baseing these conclusions on? Guaranteed if you go to 5 dif psychs each one will guess that a different chemical is off in your brain. So what chemical is your medicine supposed to be affecting? Do you know? Or do you just go with what u r told and roll with it?
Messing with that stuff CAN most definitely backfire. Altering the "chemical balance" in your brain can have adverse effects.

First of all, don’t STOP taking anything without talking to a doctor first.
This site is not the best for medical advice, your doctor is.

I’m speaking from experience.

I think she may be misinforming you.
When you first take anti depressants or anti anxiety tablets, for the first couple of weeks they can (not always) make some peoples symptoms worse…but only for a short time.
They will then help your symptoms making you feel much better.
But I m certainly not saying that medication is the way to go every time.
I was treated wit anti depressants when I was suffering from depression and they worked wonders.
But when I suffered form panic attacks, the medication made me feel funny so I stopped using it and learned how to relax deeply…I no longer suffer from either.

I was on anti depressants for a few months and felt worse. I was up all night for a few nights in a row, I had major panic attacks and tunnel vision like I was stoned. The doctor gave me a dose that was way too high for a 1st timer. I would never go on them again. St John’s Wort is better if you can get it, its natural (or find it under hypericum). I believe it has no side effects. You do need to check with a naturopath or check online cause it has contraindications with some other medications you might be on. Doctors/scientists/researchers/pharmaceutical companies are there to help us, sure, but even they have their own agendas. We are just supposed to trust them blindly, according to them. For the most part, I believe they wish to help. But too many times, things are trialled on humans that shouldn’t be, and we become the unwitting guinea pigs in a game of "who can put out a new medication faster?"

Been there, done that. And do talk to your doc first – if you come off the tablets, or go onto something new, make sure the old stuff is out of your system before you try anything else. And to Whizzkid – didn’t Kevin Trudeau get ousted as a fraud?

They did not make them drugs to help your health. They are not a church or non-profit. They are businesses that made them to make money. Vioxx was for pain and killed many thousands. She is a smart lady. Kevin Trudeau wrote 2 best-selling books on health. Here is what he says:

"Drugs only suppress symptoms, and they cause disease because they are toxic." In More Natural Cures Revealed, Kevin Trudeau says "The facts are clear, drugs, both prescription and non-prescription, do not make you healthier, they make you sicker. Drug companies are not interested in your health. Drug companies only want you to buy and use more drugs. If you want to cure yourself of any disease you have and remain healthy, you must eliminate all non-prescription and prescription drugs."

See site below for natural help for both depression and anxiety that is FREE. If you stop taking heroin you can die. So tell your doctor to stop your medication so he can do it safely.

You only need to be one yahoo answers for five minutes to know that everybody has an opinion and a lot of them are plain wrong! (In my opinion. Lol)

The lady you were talking to quite possibly doesn’t know clay from ice cream. If you have concerns talk to a medical professional, not some nutty old biddy you meet on a street corner.

Some people don’t react well to this type of med.s but most do very well with them. If a Dr. prescribes them for you give them a try if they don’t seem right stop taking them.

definately dont stop taking it. Im currently taking zoloft and once i felt better i kept forgetting to take my pills and the result of it wasn’t too pretty. Who is this lady anyways? If it’s a doctor then wow… very bad doctor. If it’s a friend or aquantance then don’t pay much mind to it. There’s a reason why there’s different anti-depressants and why doctors don’t give everyone the same thing. It’s because everyone is different and our bodies react differently from other people. If your still questioning about it then I say go speak to the person who handed it to you for more information, look it up online, or speak to a doctor.

btw i agree with the first person to comment on this.

The proof is in the pudding! How does the medication make you feel? And how long have you been on them for?

Some medication can take up to six weeks before becoming effective. So you might have to wait it out before you feel any better.

But if you have any concerns, first speak to your doctor. He knows your complete medical history and has actually studied medicine ( unlike most people who have answered)

Don’t not stop on your own. People who stop their medication by themselves are twice as more likley to relapse into a deep depression.

I have had depression and anxiety since I was a small child. Druggie mother bashing, children’s homes . Rapped 3 times at seven by 15 year old boys. Suicide attempts and self harm. I am now 51 years old and am proud to be a Survivor. (I still want to die most days but I will fight it)

I recently (2 years ago) was prescribed Anti-depressants and Anxiety medication. It did not work and did not change anything. I lost my libido and can no longer get a full erection or even feel like sex for months. This was described on the side effects of the medication pamphlet. I stopped taking the medication after a couple of years as if appeared not to be working. It has left me with permanent libido and erection problems.

I have changed my life (was a Police Officer) and taken a low paid no stress no responsibility job. This has worked. I lost my wife due to the changes, but have stopped taking medication and can survive day to day.

I am sure medication works for some but be careful. Try alternative treatments. If you have any concerns about your medication tell your doctor (I did not do this)

All the best

I agree with Whiz Kid. Pharmaceutical companies are in the business of making money for their shareholders. That is their prime concern just as tobacco companies are more interested in making money for THEIR shareholders than looking after the health and well being of their customers. It stands to reason.

If you think that all drugs are safe as some people suggest then you will also believe that the world is flat as was commonly accepted many years ago. Check out about the "wonder drug", Thalidomide, on Wikipedia and see how much damage this did to a great many people. It certainly helped comfort pregnant women but caused considerable deformities in developing fetuses.

One thing that I DO recommend from experience is that you resist the use of drugs to control any problems unless it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. This applies especially to those that mess with your brain.

There is a lot of evidence to suggest that taking drugs may cause more harm than good. This is well documented in the book, "Your Drug May be Your Problem" written by Peter R. Breggin, MD and David Cohen, Ph.D.

If you are serious about your health, I recommend that you get your own copy of this book . It seems to be directed mainly at doctors and therapists but it is written in language that anybody can read. You may be amazed at what you find within the covers of the book. [Link below]

In the book it is recommended that if you choose to cease taking drugs, do so under the supervision of your doctor as there can be problems just as there are when coming off of heroin and similar drugs.

I am a great believer that depression and similar afflictions such as anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, and bipolar disorder are caused by the way we think, and therefore they can be treated by controlling the way that we think.

James Allen, in the early 1900s, wrote several books about self improvement. Amongst them was his classic book entitled “As a Man Thinketh.” Here is an extract that demonstrates that he believed we can, and should, control our character, circumstances, and destiny by controlling our thoughts.

“A man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth…

Just as a gardener cultivates his plot, keeping it free from weeds, and growing the flowers and fruits, which he requires, so may a man tend the garden of his mind, weeding out all the wrong, useless, and impure thoughts, and cultivating toward perfection the flowers and fruits of right, useful, and pure thoughts. By pursuing this process, a man sooner or later discovers that he is the master gardener of his soul, the director of his life. He also reveals, within himself, the laws of thought, and understands, with ever-increasing accuracy, how the thought-forces and mind elements operate in shaping his character, circumstances, and destiny.”

This is just a snippet of the many words of wisdom found in this masterpiece that has formed the basis of many modern self improvement teachings. You can learn more and get your own free copy of, “As a Man Thinketh” via the Beat Your Depression blog article, "Tending The Mind Garden." posted January 30 2008. [link below]

We cannot stop various thoughts from continually entering our heads, but we can decide which thoughts we choose to allow to remain there, and those that we wish to weed out. Some speakers I have heard have used the analogy that we may not be able to stop birds from flying over our head, but we can stop them from building a nest on our head.

If you want to change your life for the better, consider changing your thinking!

Read the labels, and inserts. Check them out first at http://www.drugs.com & http://crazymeds. They are NOT made to help people: they are made to increase the profits of the drug companies! See section 1, and page Z.1, in section 2, at ezy build, below. They can cause suicide in some people, and serious side effects in others, such as sexual dysfunction, but they need to be tapered off, slowly, with medical advice as to how long.. See anxiety treatments, at ezy build (below) in section 6. Set yourself a fixed limit for worrying about any particular subject, (say; 10, or 15 minutes) after which, resolve firmly to refuse to even consider that subject again on that day: realise and accept that to do otherwise would be counterproductive to your mental health, and enjoyment of life. Use the technique for reprogramming negative thoughts and internal monologue (self talk), on pages 2, and 2L, to help you in this: some people carry a wide rubber band in their pocket: put it on their wrist; stretch, and release, as a means of reinforcing it, and speeding up the process, re-pocketing it afterwards, but I regard this as being purely optional. Practice one of the relaxation methods on pages 2, 11, 2c, or 2i, daily, and when needed. Also, give the EFT a good tryout, to see if it helps you. There is also a version for use in public places, (if you like, you can claim to have a headache, as you massage/lightly tap your temples, but you would then be restricted to subvocalising: saying it to yourself in your mind). Section 53, and pages 2, 2.q and 2.o at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris also refer: "Even though I sometimes suffer from anxiety, I deeply and completely accept myself." ~~~ LOW COST/FREE COUNSELLING: Contact your county/local mental health agency, and find out what help they can offer. Psychological counselling, with a sliding scale, based on income, is available through many religious organisations, such as Catholic counselling, the Methodist church, and the Unitarian Universalists. You don’t have to be a member. ~~~ My standard post follows, but, if you are young, antidepressants are unsuitable for young people. See depression treatments, at ezy build, below, in section 2, and consult a doctor, to eliminate thyroid problems, etc. as possible contributing factors: also seek a referral to a therapist using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy. It is your decision, and yours alone, as to whether to take any antidepressants offered, but, before you do, read section 1, and check medications out at http://www.drugs.com so you will be on the lookout for side effects, like sexual dysfunction. My strong recommendation, however, is to follow the advice of my doctor, his associate, and also Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP, and Dr. Mercola, at http://www.mercola.com and many others: avoid antidepressants (pages 2V, and 2Z refer, & antidepressant websites: page 2). The reasons why we all share the same view on this are explained in full, as you will find, if you read the whole section. All of their advice, (except prayer, because many people are not religious) I have incorporated into the "core treatments", including occupational therapy, relaxation techniques, and exercise, with others as options, such as the supplements: Inositol, or SAMe, or herbal remedies, like St. John’s wort. If you are diagnosed with clinical (major) depression, antidepressants may be necessary for a while, which will give the treatments time to become effective. The antidepressants themselves need at least several days, or even weeks to begin becoming effective. It’s a good idea to taper off them slowly, with medical advice, after several months, say, to a couple of years, at most, because they are only effective in the long term for about 30% of people. Because of this, you would be well advised to begin the treatments immediately, and maintain them. I’d just thank your mental health care provider, and pocket the prescription, trying the treatments for a few months, to see if they are sufficient for you, before considering filling it (unless clinically depressed, and having great difficulty functioning, or suicidal, in which case I’d take them). If the amount of daylight you have been exposed to recently has reduced, perhaps due to the change of seasons, see Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) in section 2, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and, instead of taking 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily; replace 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements for the winter months only! (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a little butter, to ensure its use; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong taste). Consider having your doctor test your vitamin D levels, using the 25 Hydroxyvitamin D test. Optimal levels are 50 – 55 ng/ml (115 – 125 nmol/l. It should be above 32 ng/ml. Those people who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won’t need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many people, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this difficult, to achieve.

Consult other doctors. do not go by what friends/family etc say.
However, if the dose is too strong for you, you could go to a different doctor to ascertain that.
In some cases of depression, only medicines(even a small dose) help.

I’m sorry but whiz kid and johnny sound like they are promoting books.they DO NOT realize that depression/anxiety is a form of bi polar.which is a mental dis order.why can i say this?because Ive have the same symptoms. i take Prozac, topamax, and klonopin.grant it they did not work over night.it took a couple of times readjusting the dosage.they work wonders.i do have panic attacks under stressful situations, but not like before.if i feel like one is coming on.i focus on my breathing, relax my mind.if that does not work i take a klonopin.i know someone is going to say.sure have a panic attack pop a pill..that is a last resort.RELAXING,breathing technique is first.
if your doctor gave you the meds. trust your doctor and work with him/her.do not STOP taking them on your own.
good luck
