Is there a non medication way to handle panic and anxiety attacks?

I suffer from them and all medication I’ve been on has only made the attacks worse or have had no effect at all. I’m in serious need for another solution to handle these attacks aside from going to the hospital and having them tranquilize me every other night.

Go see a therapist. Learn yoga, tai chi, or a similar art. Try reading self-help books that stress self-control and help you develop it.

I used to have panic attacks too, albeit mild ones, and I know how frustrating it is to relinquish control of your own mind and body, the only two things that are truly your own. Good luck!

First, relax your shoulders and become conscious of any tension that you may be feeling in your muscles.

Then, with gentle reassurance, progressively tense and relax all the large muscle groups. Tighten your left leg with a deep breath in, for example, hold it, then release the leg muscles and the breath. Move on to the other leg. Move up the body, one muscle group at a time.

"Slow down your breathing. This may best be done blowing out every breath through pursed lips as if blowing out a candle. Also, place your hands on your stomach to feel the rapidity of your breathing. This may allow you to further control your symptoms.

Tell yourself (or someone else if you are trying this technique with someone) that you are not "going crazy." If you are concerned about not being able to breathe, remember that if you are able to talk, you are able to breathe."

You can use self-hypnosis methods.

Get the books mentioned below.

You can go to a certified hypnotherapist for hypnotherapy, to teach you to handle the attacks, mentally.

You can also use http://www.DailyStrength.org for 24/7 person-to-person support, for free. The people there are friendly & offer much helpful advice on all types of health & mental health issues.

Good luck!

panic and anxiety are not entirly physical health problem and so medication may not always help. panic and anxiety arise from attitude. just develop self confidence and trust in your immediate family and friends and if you are a believer, trust in God. just believe that there is remedy for every situation. there is solution for every problem. if u can’t solve yourself your family members, colleagues, friends, others and may be GOD will be there to help u. above all it is necessary to develop self confidence. u are master of your destiiny. u need not panic in any situation. Just Think of the worst scenerio and visualize solution. this will help u in avoiding panic.

I know exactly what you mean and have been exactly where you are. The medications don’t work for everyone and they always make it worse before it gets better. I could not stand it and stopped taking them about three weeks in, three different times…three different drugs. I got all of the side effects, but no relief. And then….I ended up on a vacation and thankfully forgot to bring the pills. When I got home, I was myself again. Granted, that vacation was with a new lover, and that never hurts, but I realized that my anxiety was self-inflicted and that there was not a medicine available that was going to help. She eventually broke up with me, but realizing that things were changable brought me out of the funk.

Yap there are other ways to control panic attacks. Believe in youlself because you are the only one who can help yourself.
First, try to evaluate and resolve any conflicts in your life such as family or marital conflicts or problems, financial aspects, consciential, life, job or social status, and other problems you may think of. Second, when you have panic attacks teach yourself to deny, avoid or deviate the issue by involving yourself in other activities like playing with the kids, engaging with a talk with the neighbors and other people, listening to the music or viewing the TV. When you have mastered this technique then, you are on your way to healing yourself. You don’t need the tranquilizers and the sedatives. Throw it away. OK? Have a positive and happy outlook in life. Enjoy because life is so good. Cheers!

I know of two very effective ways to deal with anxiety attacks.

The first is called EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and you can get a free manual to get yourself started with this. It’s quite simple and can be practiced at any time, (anywhere), when you are feeling anxious. http://www.emofree.com

The other is meditation. Although meditation has been considered difficult to master, today there are many systems that guide you through and help you to achieve what once would have taken years to achieve, in a very short time. One of these systems is called Holosync Technology. Simply put, you listen to sounds through a headset that take you to the desired meditative state. http://www.centerpointe.com/links.php?ad

I use both of the above and have overcome many issues that were in my life. I now handle stress so much better and can stop myself from ever getting to a state of feeling out of control. It’s very amazing how well these both work.

As well diet and nutrition do play a strong role in how we control our emotions and I would recommend you review your diet and ensure you are feeding your mind and body food that supports health and well being.

I hope you find what works for you. The problem with medication is it is not addressing the issue, simply masking the problem. The above systems help you develop your own mind and body to face the challenges that we all meet each day.

Chamomile Tea. Drink it on the first sign of a panic attack. It really soothes your nerves.

Stay in control. There’s no option here, because you ARE in control. You just may not have totally realised it. YOU decide how fast you’re going to breathe, and how you’re going to respond to the signs your body gives you. Get in tune with your body, get used to telling it "NO don’t be silly we’re going to do things my way".
