Panic Attacks…?

I have been having shortness of breath for about a year now…Feels like I can’t get enough air in my lungs, and it’s very uncomfortable! I get dizzy, and get head aches everyday as I’m always trying to breath as deep as possible to fully fill my lungs. This lasts for a few days most of the time, sometimes up to a week. I just went to see my doctor recently, and she said I was having panic attacks. She mentioned therapy, and I’ve gone before but found there was nothing to talk about…The only thing bothering me right now is the first day of school, and you can’t talk for long about that, if at all. So, I was wondering if anyone knew of any excersizes, or foods, or anything really, that would allow me to breath without getting headaches. Don’t suggest deep breathing, because the whole point of me posting this is so I can deep breath comfortably.

Gimme a kiss and I guarantee the symptoms will go away :)

I am sorry I don’t know any exercises that really work… I have struggled with panic attacks for over 10 years. I took Zoloft for 3 years and was anxiety attack free for the entire time… went off for two and also did not have attacks, but now they are back… So as a matter of fact I am going to the doctor’s tomorrow to get meds again. I am not thrilled about it, but I too have tried diet, and therapy and no relief.

Panic attacks are treatable. Therapy is a great option, but make sure you see a therapist who is a specialist in anxiety and panic disorder. I have seen therapists who were not, and they had no idea how to treat these problems correctly.

Panic attacks are essentially a trick your mind plays on you- a cycle of having physical symptoms, fearing them afterwards which induces them, and then fearing them again. If you can break the cycle, you can get over the attacks.

Also, you may need to treat what initially caused the physical symptoms in the first place. That could be excessive worrying, having a perfectionistic attitude, etc. But again, these are easily treatable.

I recovered from panic attacks, so i know you can too.

Good luck!

Sounds like you’re hyperventilating for some reason, probably from panic attacks. If that’s the case, trying to breathe deeply will only make it worse. Just try to breathe normally.

I also suffer from Panic Attacks.. they suck. Mine started with that same feeling, that I couldn’t get in a deep breath.

I also didn’t have much to talk about in thearpy. What I got out of it was that I was OK and not "going crazy" as I thought. She was there to help me with coping techiniques. Much like you are asking.

Some things to do…
-Turkey is good for you… it helps to calm.
-Chamomile tea is very soothing and calming.. just add a little milk and splenda.
-Make sure that you get enough vitamins.. take a suppliment if you are not sure.
-Exercise everyday.. it only has to be a little bit.

Basically the best thing that you can do to improve your mental state is to take care of your body. The two are so intertwined. It all comes down to eating healthy and giving your body all that it needs.

I also find that a nice hot bath is soothing and calming. It helps me to relax. Also reading a good book is a great distraction.
Lilac and pepperment are also soothing, calming scents. You can find candles oils and lots of things.

I don’t know if you are religious at all but for me the MOST IMPORTANT thing it prayer. I think that it is being able to give all my worries and things "away".

I know that this is all easier said then done but I will tell you from experience that I have been there and seen the HUGE difference that it makes.

Also, stay away from nicotine, drugs and alcohol. All WILL make it worse.

Hugs!

You didn’t say if you smoke or not, but I have trouble getting a breath when I get anxious. If you do smoke and you can quit then it may help your breathing when you do have another panic attack, unless you have done so much damage to your lungs that they can’t be repaired like I did.
