Panic attacks. Easy to overcome?
Recently a person had approached me asking for help for his repeated panic attacks. He feels as if he had lost his memory,
He is going to fall down, He is getting fear bouts etc. He had consulted a number of doctors who had given him only some tranquilisers which he feels are not useful at all.
I had given him the following tips.
1.Never be idol. Do some or the other job. Even if you have no job at least listen to music.Get always occupied.
2.Regular excercise in the morning from 6 to 7.
3. Reading holy book every day. At least one chapter or 30 minutes of reading.
4.Whenever the attack comes take deep breathing.
After one month now he has come to me telling his panic attacks have almost become 50% less.
Do any of you got any suggestions for him?
Panic attacks are not disorders at all. They are just brain requiring consolation. They can be treated by self suggestion.——there is a article in www.webMD.com.
Are you his doctor??? Now consulting online answers to support your treatment?
If not, and I hope not, do not allow your friend to take your advice over his doctor. If he does not like his current doctor’s advice then help him find a new doctor. Panic attacks are hard to deal with and are especially hard for someone who hasn’t suffered from them to understand. Help your friend by finding him a doctor he is comfortable with and look for local support groups he can go to. He can feel like he is not alone and get a lot of helpful advice from people who have been down the road before. Please stop trying to dish out what you think will help him. It is wonderful that you care so much and your friend values your opinion so highly, but to get through this he needs a very stable base of therapy and coping techniques. No scripted regimen works for everyone.

I suffered from extremely debilitating panic attacks for over 10 years. My panic attacks made me feel like i was loosing my memory, I felt outside of myself like I knew my fears were unfounded and unrealistic, but yet I continued to havethem andin the first 2 years they continued to get worse and worse but as time went by they eventually subsided. I used anti-deprssants, tranquilizers, mood stimulators, you name it. Then i found that music actualy helped ‘distract’ my brain. i listened to music without words, like simple piano music or violin music, words in music would cause the attacks to come often, but after i started listening only to simple music without words my brain would subconciously focus on the music and not on the panic ‘triggers’ i started wearing headphones everywhere.in the beginning I would have severe panic attacks on average of 3-4 times daily, now I can say I have not had a panic attack at all in neary 4 years.
seems like you have already given him great advice- in fact that would be my next advice, excersise, stay busy, deep breathing, but also he shoud msintain a very healthy diet, which should include 6-8 glasses of water daily. The brain needs water to create endorphins and seratonin to create a good mood and relaxation.

I think your ideas are very logical and I do believe they are helpful to your friend..
You are not administering medications so I do not see why people are up in the air about your advise.
Keep up the good work everyone needs a friend like you.
Not everyone is willing to go to the Dr. so for those of you that won’t I have high hopes that you find a nice friend to share with.

I used to suffer terrible panic attacks, but now have them under control by avoiding ALL caffeine – even in tea.
I take 10mg Propranolol each morning.
Stimulating the vagus nerve also brings quick relief if a person is suffering an attack – to do this – place the bottom of the hands – near the wrists – gently on top of closed eyes – apply some pressure – not enough to cause pain, but enough
to be able to feel it – leave the hands there for a couple of minutes – the vagus nerve stimulation will slow the heart and can often bring a panic attack to an end.
Using a re-breathe bag is also excellent – keep one in the car or handbag and use when necessary – this works best when you feel things are getting out of control (full blown panic attack).
Your deep breathing advice is erroneous because this only serves to increase the oxygen levels in the blood which are already too high due to the hyperventilation caused by the panic attack – the re-breathe bag will serve to decrease the oxygen levels and increase the carbon dioxide levels – increased carbon dioxide will lead to a feeling of calm and help to break the vicious circle of hyperventilation.

Assuming there is no serious physical mental illness, where heavy drugs are usually given I would highly recommend meditation. It calms the mind and the emotions, fills the body with much needed oxygen and basically calms the body and mind.It helps a person focus and be centered.
I have a close friend who has panic attacks, but he doesn’t do anything other than take pills for it which cause other problems.

Needs therapy to figure out why they are occuring in the first place, so then the real issue can be dealt with.
