I have panic attacks, I have had them for about over 1 year now. My doctor has just now (2-3 weeks ago) put me on prozac for the panic attacks and for depression. I still have some moments when I feel depressed and kinda suicidal. I dont want to kill myself, it just that sometimes I have these horrible thoughts that come into my head. About cutting my wrists, I dont know why I get them and I hate getting them. I dont want to die. I am only 22, I have been married for only 2 years and I love my husband very very much. Whenever I get really depressed or have a bad panic attack he is always there for me. So is my family. I just dont understand why I have these feelings and thoughts. I have never been depressed or had these thoughts before. I have always been the really upbeat positive girl, but lately it just seems like I am always bummed out. I know that the prozax takes time to work and my husband tells me that he can already tell a differemce and I do see a counslor.

You’re doing everything you should be doing. It can take up to 6 weeks for the full effect of the medicine to really work and if your husband is already seeing a difference and you’re seeing a counselor, then everything is going in the right direction. It’s normal to still have those feelings, it’s just keeping those feelings under control that’s important.

get off that drug fast, that has been known to cause suicidal thoughts and you do not want to mess with that, i also had been suffering with anxiety/panic attacks was put on zanix, that worked but it’s an addictive drug,it’s all about self talk when you feel one coming on tell yourself you will be OK,take lone, short deep breathes in from nose out through mouth, then think of something else and really concentrate on that, i have been taking welbutran xl 300 mg for 2 years for my depression and wow that has helped me alot.

I agree with the person who said, GET OFF THAT PROZACS NOW!!! If you are worse taking this drug you need to immediately stop taking it. Do not, I repeat do not let others tell you that you need time to adjust to the medicine! This drug is bad news, especially for someone of your age experiencing the suicidal thoughts about wanting to cut your wrists! The trouble with now a days is, a person comes to a bump in the road in their life, and instead of trying to find out what the real problem is and working things out, to get back to the frame of mind they used to have, (such as you saying you are an upbeat positive girl), They do not want to help themselves get better. They want the quick fix….head shrinker medicine!! It is good that you are seeing a counselor, however you need to keep in mind that a lot of these people are way to quick to give out the drugs!! You are 22 you, do not say if you work or have children. You have been married 2 yrs and have a supportive husband and family. Anxiety, panic attacks, and depression are really not that uncommon for your age. You have just crossed the threshold into adulthood, this can be a very stressful time. You might have fears about what he future holds for you etc. etc. Anyway what I am getting at here is you need to discover the cause of your panic attacks and depression, and it is best to do this without medication, Once you open that door and can pin point what is bothering you, then you can take the steps to getting back to your normal upbeat positive old self!! I wish you all the best!

As a Nutritional Psychologist I believe that depression is due to a treatable metabolic disorder, related to the consumption of sugars in our food.

Please read the under-mentioned articles and discuss with the doctor or ask him/her to be referred to a Nutritional Doctor or Clinical Nutritionist.

Prozac can take up to six weeks to really start helping you – it’s really frustrating to have to wait, I know!

I think you really need to tell both your doctor and counsellor about these dark thoughts you’re having – Prozac and other anti depressants can make depression worse when you first start them. DO tell your prescribing doctor that this is happening – it’s VERY important.

If you really feel that you’re getting worse, you MUST tell your doctor. He may advise you to decrease the Prozac, and he may then put you on something else; there are many different anti depressants. Don’t listen to the person on here who told you to increase the dose – this is a TERRIBLE idea and you mustn’t do it, unless your doctor tells you to – which he won’t as you’ve only just started it.

Depression is horrible, but you’re doing the right thing in getting help. Best wishes to you.

The meds will definitely take the edge off, BUT the long term permanent solution should be looked at.
I suggest (from my own experience), that by becoming more aware of your own body, you can learn how your body will respond to your mind. To do this, you will need some instruction in hatha yoga, which should let you experience the feeling of being able to control and alter your physical body. the gateway to all of this MIND-BODY stuff is your breathing. It is very simple and very well understood, but you will not find many doctors (if any) that know to prescribe this course of action.
