Lately, I have been experiencing panic attacks everyday. They last from 30 mins – 2 hrs. I feel extremely light headed, tingly in my fingers & toes while getting a cold sweat, I immediately feel like something’s seriously wrong with me, that I’m beginning to go insane, or that I’m about to die. I also feel like everything’s unreal, or almost like I’m in an acoma and that everything is presently a dream. It feels like a bad high. I’m afraid to leave the house alone fearing that I may have a panic attack while I’m out. I’m afraid to go to work or school. I don’t exercise anymore cause I feel extremely tired everyday and I’m scared I might faint while exercising. I’ve gone to the emergancy because my doctor perscribed me anti-depressants that reacted really badly with my body. Once I was there, the doctor said that my blood & heart were normal and that I had panic/anxiety disorders. Again I was perscribed medication in order to try and help calm my anxiety/panic attacks. However, I’m paranoid that if I do take this medication I will once again go through what I did w/ the anti-depressants. I have read that many feel medication for panic disorders don’t completely help & that some people have experienced these symptoms for up to 10 yrs. I’m really scared that I might go through that. I’ve read adds on the net for books & CDs that help cure panic attacks w/o the need of medication. My question is, has anyone ever tried this method instead of using perscribed medication and which book/CD has worked the best for you? Thanks.

The impurities and imperfections in our body and mind is the main cause for such anxiety. Anxiety and mental disorder does not come all of a sudden. It is a chain reaction. It is built over a period of time by us.

The remedy for this is a total change in life style. Plus there should be a transformation of mind set. Habits (both physical and mental), and moral behavior should change. Should have great vision. Should channelize all our time, energy and resources towards some higher pursuits. We should accumulate lot of good-will. Keep away from ill-will.

Healthy habits and traits will come only when our thinking is pure and clean. Thinking should be simple and easy. We should have positive thoughts only. Too much of desire for sense objects should be controlled. Because desire results in attachment. If the desire is not fulfilled, we get irritation or frustration, thus leading to anger and infatuation. From infatuation, we get confusion of memory. Confusion of memory will take you to loss of reason. Thus anxiety comes over a period of time. It is an unnecessary load on us, which we gradually accumulate because of our indiscipline, disorganized way of living, unsystematic approach, etc.

Panic attacks are very scary and all the meds in the world are not going to make them go away until you understand why you get them.
What are you worried about, what is stressing you, what in your life is making you loose control?

When you have a panic attack, which is the result of the anxiety, your body sends a lot of adrenalin into your blood stream in preparation for that ‘flight or fight’ response that is to ensure our survival. if you do not fight off or run from what ever has scared you, the adrenalin does not have a chance to burn off and builds toxins in your body.

The result is the dizziness, shaking, tingling from hyperventilation, and finally the shivers as your body tries to figure it all out and deal with the chemical reactions going on in your body.

The best thing you can do is to run, when you feel an attack coming on, run like your life depends on it. go to the gym, get out some dance music, what ever it takes to build up a sweat and pump the adrenalin out. then drink plenty of water.

I did this and got through 2 years of panic attacks and cured my anxiety without any drugs.

I tried everything, and they all helped to a degree.
But I gave in to medication and I am glad I did.It took some trial and error to find the right drugs for me.
But I am happy to take them now, and be free of panic and general anxiety.
I take Lexapro 20mg, and Seroquel 50mg at night to sleep, and 25mgs morning and night.

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this herb called "St John’s Wort" – it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
If you’re unable to take St John’s Wort, you can substitute it with Siberian Ginseng or Licorice Herb.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior – Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

Without going into detail…I can relate to almost everything you mention in regard to your shyness and social anxiety. As a child I was always extremely shy. As an adult I am still extremely shy. Untreated shyness can lead to social anxiety disorder and mental depression.
Your shyness reactions can occur at any or all of the following levels: mental, emotional, physical, or behavioral. That means that you could experience one or two of the behavioral reactions and none of the others. Extreme shyness it is the third largest of the mental disorders, after only depression and alcoholism.
Undiagnosed Social Phobia causes untold suffering and millions of lives in self-imposed chains. At some point along that line — and that point varies by the individual — simple shyness turns into Social Phobia, Anxiety, Depression, Social Isolation.
Your life is dictated by the need to either avoid certain situations or endure them with extreme anxiety. I can’t really express my experience with my friends and family because they simply cannot understand what it is like to live with shyness, and fear every day, with anxiety that has no logical or easily explainable root. It will be hard to do this for shy people like you and me. But remember, people want friends just as much as you do. They want to feel important. So if you can do that, just smile, ask questions, compliment, walk each other to class, they’ll be your friend.
Let go of the assumption you’re incapable of being social, or not socially acceptable. It is absolutely not true, it will take time, but you are able to be confident and be yourself.
If you find that your shyness is beginning to present problems in your life, you may want to seek some help for it.
Look at it as being the same as taking a self-improvement course at your local college, or going to a self-help seminar. Help for your shyness can often be done in only a few sessions and will last for a lifetime, so don’t deny yourself something that can make a big improvement in your quality of life!
One of the reasons for participating to Yahoo! Answers were to be able to express what I have learned about shyness, social phobia, anxiety, and depression. how it doesn’t make sense, how it ambushes you, how it hides from explanation, how it actually feels. Maybe something I say will help somebody to understand it better.
That’s my hope, anyway. Hope it helps you.
