What are some good things to try to calm down if having a panic/anxiety attack?

I have been having many of them recently (probably from too much stress). I am around many people and I have to pretend like nothing is wrong with me and try to get back to "normal" as soon as possible.

You can always go to a dr and get medications or see a psychiatrist. I’ve gotten into meditation for relaxing. I bought a book called, "Meditation for Dummies." Its very easy to follow and has several different methods for meditation. There are actual studies that show this can lower your stress levels and even cholesterol. Its been helping me so far. Plus, I can use some meditation practices outside of my home so if I’m getting really anxious I can practice breathing techniques to calm down.

I take half mg risperdal (sometimes a fourth) and it prevents me from having them…unless it’s a really really stressful situation. If you don’t get medication for them…then you’ll probably look "crazy" to others. Just let people know that you have panic attacks and not to worry if you start breathing heavy etc. If you don’t get this under control…they will get worse. Ask your dr. if there are classes you can take..groups you can go to..or books you can read to help you. Do this in advance. Don’t wait till the situation is already upon you. Be prepared. ( You never know when you’ll get stuck on the top of a really high bridge in the rain…like I did !!)

The best and cheapest thing that took control of my panic attacks was a paper bag and knowing I wasn’t going crazy. Know that if it ever happens again, you’ll get through it. Ride the wave and you’ll be back to normal. Also look for triggers that make panic attacks worse…lack of sleep, stress, bad diet, worrying too much.

I’m not one to immediately look for a pill to cure all things… the doc I saw gave me Pamelor (an anti-depressant) and I had horrible side effects, so bad that they gave me WORSE panic attacks, migraines, hallucinations…I almost had a nervous breakdown because of that stupid stuff.

When you feel your heart begin to race, breath in a paper bag until your pulse is back to normal.

I did this for a few months and I’m panic-attack free!

I learned to breath deeply when I felt them coming on and they would stop. I realized that when they were about to come on or in the middle of one my breathing was very shallow which makes everything 10 times worse!! If I stopped for just a moment and started deep breathing I could actually stop them from happening. It takes a little practice but it’s easy and works!!

Go to a quiet dark room. Play some relaxing music. Sit in a comfortable chair. Breathe slowly and deeply. This will calm you down.

Either slow deep breaths or do something that will take your mind off of what is bothering you. For example, call a friend on the phone, go to Wal-mart, cook something, or get on here and ask funny questions?!?!? Oh yea, ask your doctor about xanax or alprozolam….that works like a charm EVERYTIME!!!! I have had anxiety panic attacks for over 10 years and it really sucks !!! Good luck to you
