i get really bad panic attacks! any help on how to make them subside?

I’ve noticed that the best way to cope with panic attacks is to stop resisting them. Most of the drama and …well, panic associated with panic attacks is caused by trying to resist what you’re feeling.

This only makes you feel more anxious and gets you even more worked up. All that does is make things worse.

So, what I recommend that you do is embrace all the feelings of a panic attack. The racing heart beat, the sweaty palms, and everything else. No one has EVER died from a panic attack so you really don’t have to be afraid of any harmful effects. Just bring it on and let all the fear flow through you.

Before you know it things will get better and your anxiety will start to drop.

Ahhh, the magic question. It will depend on you. Try to focus on something else. Luckily, my mom and my boyfriend try to distract me. They start talking to me about something I might find interesting or start asking me questions. This usually distracts me and I calm down. I find it works best when I am lying down. My mom has bad panic attacks too.I usually just tell them what is going on and I am usually good after that.Just try to find a way to distract yourself by thinking about something or reading or something that will hold your attention.

There are also medications for these sorts of things, but I just try to get a hold of myself. My sister did have to start recently taking medication for this though. She is 15 and can’t control it. She will start shaking uncontrollably and get dizzy. It is really sad.

Wow I just answered this in a question about phobias…EFT, Emotional Freedom Techniques works the same as Acupuncture, except there are no needles. It works for Anxiety, fears, traumas, guilt’s even for physical pains. I had over 20 years of flashback nightmares. Of course I was skeptical of trying anything new. But I was so exhausted from taking meds and getting no where with traditional counseling. It took only a little while to learn. In March it will be 2 years No NIGHTMARES not a single one! In fact It is free to learn, so since there is no expense how can anyone not give it a try? (No belief system involved) It is one of the few things that will work even if you don’t believe it will. With over a 90% success rate I have never met anyone myself who gave it a try and it didn’t solve their problem. The main website emofree.com has the free download e-book and you should watch the 2 short video clips. After some practice go on U-tube, there are hundreds of videos. Stick to Gary Craig’s (The developer of the technique) or Robert Smith has over 200 free videos describing every problem you could have…I wish you the best. Remember it’s Free so you have nothing to lose except your problems! Oh by the way in March it will be 2 YEARS since I had Anxiety Attacks, no more meds as a result. My Dr said I no longer needed them!

Sit down keep your back straight (It helps me to catch more breath) Breath in to a bag to get your breathing restored to how it usually is and try and find someone that you know to sit next to you and just talk to try and distract you from the panic. I know how bad it can feel i have had a few but it is hard to sit down because i know your in a stage of panic not in the mood to sit and chill out ha ha but you have to just force yourself and just tell yourself nothings going to happen its only a panic attack whats the worst that can happen.

Advice, from a clinical psychologist is to breathe in to the count of 3: (one thousand one; one thousand two; one thousand three) each takes around a second to say to yourself, in your mind, and out to the count of 3.

View http://deeplyrelax.com & http://www.deepsloweasy.com/html/intro.htm Note: the controlled breathing only helps with the symptoms, as do medications/herbal remedies. Address the underlying cause, which requires some form of therapy; see your-mental-health.8m.com, below, re anxiety, on pages H, & I. Imagine that the cause of your panic; your anxieties, fears, your self doubts, self recriminations, all the agonizing "I’m-so-Stupids"; every painful "I-can’t-do-it" are huge raging, hurtful bulls snorting and charging at you. You see them coming at you and you hold out your red matador’s cape at arms length and simply let them charge right by. Every time they come at you, hold out your arm with the red cape and let them rage and snort and go right on past. Some people recommend nettle tea, with a little honey. Others use Lavender tea, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, but use no milk or cream with herbal teas, or Valerian (caution: use it for 3 weeks at most!). Know how these affect you before driving, or doing anything dangerous, and it is far better to use the treatments, rather than relying on herbal remedies. Free online PANIC COURSE – http://www.panic-attacks.co.uk also available by email. See the section on panic attacks at http://www.mind.org.uk also Ebooklet form. They recommend letting a panic attack run its course, without doing anything to treat it, so you KNOW you will survive it. The usual maximum is 30 minutes, until symptoms begin to subside.

Write this down on a piece of paper, and when your panicking read it through. It worked for me

Remember, feelings of panic are just exaggerations of normal bodily stress reactions
Sensations are neither harmful not dangerous, just unpleasant. Nothing worse will happen.
Stop adding to the panic with frightening thoughts of where panic will lead.
Stay in the present. Be aware of what is happening to you rather than concern yourself with how much worse it may get.
Wait and give the fear time to pass.
Notice that when you stop adding to panic with frightening thoughts, the fear begins to fade.
Focus on coping with facing the fear rather than trying to avoid it or escape from it.
Look around you. Plan what you will next as the panic subsides.
Think about the progress made so far, despite all the difficulties.
When you are ready to go on, do so in an easy, relaxed matter. There is no hurry.

Hope this helps

Hi Samantha,

Try to relax your mind. Read books; see your best programme; see a movie; call your best friend and speak to him/her; go out and have a hotdog; all the time keeping your mind off the subject that is creating this anxiety in you. You know how to do that? When the subject matter comes up again, shake your head twice as if saying NO to the thought, and the thought causing you anxiety will just vanish. Hope this helps..
What’s more, watch this video, it really helped me when I was struggling myself with such panic attacks. It’s a very clear explanation.

Yes. I have suffered from panic attacks most of my life. I am 57 years old now. I was diagnosed with Panic Disorder in 1995. I take medication everyday for it. Without it, I will suffer attacks at any time.
But learning calming techniques are very important. Surround yourself with things you find soothing in your home.

For example, I love candles, and small oil lamps. Pretty scents. I have them all over my house. Take a warm bath. Take a walk. Exercise is wonderful for panic disorder. Call a friend. Focus on something beautiful. Have a pet. Pets are a great aid with people who have panic disorder. Pets are loyal, and know when you are not feeling well. They will be there for you.

Breathe in through the nose (slowly), out through the mouth (with your diaphram) slowly. This works WONDERS. Even for nausea (which I get with an attack). Heat is a trigger for me. When I get overheated, I panic. Go into a cool place. Fresh air. An open space. Soothing music helps too. Feel better. You’ll be fine. No one ever died from panic disorder as far as I know.

Panic attacks are horrible – I know. I suffered with them for years. One of the biggest things with getting over them I think is the realisation that there is nothing to fear – they can’t hurt you. One of the biggest problems is the fear of having a panic attack actually brings them on and it just gets worse.

I think they are caused by an accumulation of stresses and I’ve just written an article about my experiences on my blog site about how I got my rid of my panic attacks and regained control of my life. It’s here if you want to have a read -
http://toxinfreefuture.com/healthblog/2009/12/16/how-to-stop-panic-attacks/

What I discovered is that with a bit of knowledge and a bit of determination, I could get rid of my panic attacks and anxiety. I’m certain you can too.

As others have said try to learn relaxation methods. Did you tried hypnosis? It may help you. Also, learn how to overcome them yourself while you can take some medication for it. Talking with someone that does understand your situation does help.
