What can you tell me about panic attacks?
I`m 14 years old, and I got my first panic attack last year. I got really scared. I haven`t asked for help yet coz when I have a problem I think I`m the only one, and no one understands me. If I don`t see a doctor, can it become worse and harm me? Have you ever gotten a panic attack? HELP! PLS!
Anxiety and panic attacks are not generally harmful, especially for someone your age. But they are very scary, and uncomfortable. Panic attacks are basically an amplified version of our fight or flight instinct. That is why when you are having one, you feel that you just need to get out of the situation.
I would suggest that you journal your attacks for a little while, and try to determine when they are occurring. Is it only in certain situations, or do they happen for no apparent reason? What symptoms do you have during a panic attack? Log that information for a few days, then go to see the doc. I have them pretty badly, and am still receiving treatment, but they are getting better, and I am learning how to deal with them.
But you should definitely tell your folks that you need to see the doc, because there very well could be something else going on.
Hope this is helpful

I understand you. I had my first panic attack in the evening, on 23rd June 2008 (I was 20). I had agoraphobia, too I am under a terapy from August 2008 (Xanax). It helps, but you are still too young to take drugs… you should ask for help to a psicologian, who will talk to you and try to find out what’s wrong with you. Don’t get lost!

I’m almost 54 years old and I’ve had panic attacks for years. My daughter is almost 17 and she’s had them since she was about your age. They are kept under control with medication and therapy. They won’t hurt you physically but they will cause you some problems if you have them frequently. I would talk to your doctor and your parents to see if you can get some help before they become an even worse problem. You can learn to deal with them and there is help available it you reach out for it. I know my daughter hasn’t had a really severe panic attack in about two years. Small ones that she’s able to control but none that take her over.

When I had them I did not know what they were, and neither did any of the many doctors I consulted. After years of suffering, a new friend told me what I had, panic attacks and anxiety. I did not want to take meds, so I continued to suffer for a few more years. Five years ago I decided to try medication, and counseling. Both have given me a huge push towards a normal life. I simply could not survive without meds. Panic and anxiety are hell. You need to try and get help while you are still young. Counseling would be very advisable, and you must be gut honest with your counselor, Blessings to you.
