i have been having panioc attacks for about 2 years now! ive lost my job, its hard for me to pick my son up from school and drop him off! i cant even leave my house to walk to the corner store without panicing. I need to know the best way to stop it without medication!

I hope you’ll take the time to educate yourself on this. Panic attacks are your body’s fight/flight reaction to too much stress. When the panic attacks happen, let go and go with it instead of fighting them. They will be over. They always are. Learn ways to cope with anxiety. You may need the help of a therapist.

I heard of a breathing technic where you breath in for several seconds and then breath out for several seconds. You really need to see a phychiatrist or psycologist or therapist and they can give you technics for handling panic attacks.

Oh I’ve had some of those…the best thing is just to take a breather and relax! If that doesn’t work for you then you have to talk to your doctor!

I have this same problem. It started for me my first year in high school. I dealt with it throughout high school – all four years – without knowing what it was or why it happened. I finally broke down my first year of college and saw my doctor. He prescribed me a medication that evens out the chemical imbalance that makes panic attacks surface. I have been taking it for two years, along with some stress/anxiety classes that are offered at a community college and I am happy now to say that I feel much better. Now, I am not saying I am cured. I have panic attacks every once in a while that cause me to stay home from work but not as often. The doctor also prescribed me a medicine that is fast-acting so if I am at work or driving I dont have to pull over and wait for it to subside. It has helped a lot for me. Dont let yourself go through the pain I did for four years.
Good luck!!

I feel your pain, i have also delt with panic attacks for most of my life. I felt the same way as you–i really did not want to live my life depending on medication! In all honesty, you have to learn how to talk yourself out of a panic attack! I seriously think this is the ONLY cure for them! Tell yourself that you WILL be fine!!!!! Nothing is gonna happen to you! Try it! and make sure you control breathing bc i know for me the breathing would freak me out even worse–who needs that during a panic attack!

I hope you get through it, i know myself how TERRIBLE living with such a disorder is–but don’t let it ruin or run your life! take control!!!
GOOD LUCK!

Hi, I’m sorry to hear about your panic attacks and how they are affecting your life.

Have you seen doctor or therapist? I can relate to not wanting to take medication, but it sounds like a good therapist might be able to help you by figuring out what might be causing your condition. It could be something in your past or an ongoing stressful situation that is making you have panic attacks. I’m sure losing your job must have made you feel even worse!

We all deal with these things in different ways, and millions of people have panic attacks.

To help stay calm and help prevent panic attacks, you should practice deep breathing every day. Use a technique taught in yoga called diaphragmatic breathing. Start off by breathing in while letting your stomach move out, then breathe out and feel your stomach move inwards. Soon it will come naturally, and will slow your heart rate and blood pressure down, and make you feel more relaxed. Make sure you breathe slowly, holding each in and out-breath for a count of 3 or 5, or whatever you feel comfortable with.

Then, if you have a panic attack, you will know how to breathe and will be so focused on breathing and counting that you block out the panic attack. You might have to do this for 10-15 minutes until your panic attack subsides.

You can also try to focus on a repetitive movement like walking on the spot if you start feeling panicked. Anything that takes your attention away from your panic attack is good.

On an everyday basis, you can also try relaxing with music or aromatherapy (lavender oil is good, put a few drops in a warm bath or in massage oil). Visualization works for many people too.

Hope some of these ideas can help.
