I’ve been on Lexapro for 6 months now. Side effects are really low if started at a low dose (5mg). The main side effect that bugs me is the weight gain. If I would’ve known that I would gain weight, I could’ve prevented it. I guess it just makes you hungrier since your life feels more in control after taking it. I also have to warn that sexual drive gets really low too. I’ve learned to control that to though. You may have to kind of do trial and error on these medicines. they work differently on everyone. I love it…it changed my life.

There is no best medication for panic attacks. Usually the Dr. prescribes one and lets you take it for a few weeks to see how it does. If it doesn’t work at all they will have you try something else. If it works some they may increase the dosage. I hope you find the right one assuming its you who is having the attacks. :)

Ativan (Lorazepam) is a benzodiazepine, which is a drug designed to help supress your central nervous system by hyperpolarizing your GABA receptors.

What does this mean in english?

If you are suffering from panic attacks where you are passing out, convulsing or putting yourself at physical risk; Ativan is designed to act fast in putting the breaks on your panic attack by increasing the availability of GABA, which is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in your central nervous system. Your body makes GABA available naturally, however, benzodiazepine bonds to your GABA receptors and makes more GABA available for longer periods of time. If you’ve never taken Benzo’s before, they are absolutely amazing in how calming they make you feel.

There are many reasons why we suffer from unmanageable panic. Benzodiazepines are the class of drugs that are designed to treat anxiety, panic and acute epilepsy by essentially disabling our central nervous system.

Common forms of benzodiazepine are Valium, Xanax, Klonopin and Ativan.

These drugs are easy to get a hold of and very addicting and I only recommend you take them under a Dr’s supervision.

Only your doctor can answer that but Ativan(sublingual) works pretty quickly. Therapy is a must if the situation deteriorates. Good luck.

Have you ever had a panic attack? Have you ever felt so scared and panicky but had no idea why?

An anxiety panic attack can play havoc with your body as well as the ability to live your life in a normal and enjoyable fashion. By taking the time to learn about how anxiety and panic attacks are caused and treatment techniques you can take back control of your life.

The best panic attack treatment is realizing that you can control them and that no harm is going to come to you. Once you have mastered how to do this, panic attacks will no longer dominate and control your life. Instead, you will be back in control.

Hi,
Panic Attacks are hell aren’t they.
I had 3 times in my life where I had awful anxiety and panic attacks with each of these times lasting about a year before the anxiety settled down.

The absolutely Gold standard treatment for panic attacks is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy which is a way of retraining your mind. Sometimes it is hard to believe but the way you think directly acts on the way you feel and can lead to awful panic attacks.

This Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is done with a therapist and once you start to practice it – it is suggested you can seriously reduce you panic and anxiety within about 2 weeks.
The problem is that sometimes they are so severe that you need some medication to help calm down until the CBT gets it under control.

Taking some of the benzodiazepines (valium, ativan, xanax, serepax) can be helpful as they are a type of anti anxiety and have a sedative effect but are not good for you in the long term as they are so addictive. They are fast acting and make you feel calmer.

Taking an antidepressant such as some of the SSRI’s (paxil, prozac, lexapro, zoloft) are really beneficial in helping the brain to reestablish its chemicals and this too leads to reducing your anxety and panic. They can take up to 6 weeks to get the maximum effect.

Remember:

Panic attacks are NOT life threatening and not harmful even though it feels like you are going to die at the time.

It is normal for your heart to race, to feel shaky, sick, have blurry vision and feel like you are going to faint when you have an attack. You can get tingling in your hands which is caused from breathing in too much oxygen even though it feels like you are not getting enough. It is truly really scary.

The worst thing that can happen is that you faint from overbreathing. Once you faint then you wake up and there is no damage.

You CANNOT have convulsions or seizures from panic attacks.

I would recommend talking to a therapist or counsellor as they would be well informed of how to deal with anxiety and panic as it is VERY common. Read some really good books as well..I really liked books by Claire Weeks called "peace from nervous suffering’ as they give some really good information and strategies for coping.
You can also buy Cognitive Behaviour Therapy workbooks which I found helpful.

Good Luck – I know just how terrible they can be and how hard it is to function normally while you are panicking inside.
