Why is my husband having panic attacks when he drives?

My husband has a lot of anxiety but with the driving I think it’s developed into a phobia. He becomes completely debilitated. If he takes medication it’s ok but what is causing this? He doesn’t ever remember having some terrible driving accident in the past or any terrible experience related to driving. Also is there a way to cure this other than medication?

If the medication is working have him continue on it but it sounds like the medication is just masking the problem. Try changing his diet to slowly get rid of all stimulants and increase his B6 intake by including complex carbohydrates in his diet. GABA is the natural calming chemical in the brain and it has been shown that many anxiety sufferers are deficient in this natural neurotransmitter. B6 naturally increases the amount of GABA in the brain which produces a calming effect without the side effects of prescription medicine.

Here’s a technique that I learnt to help me get through my panic attacks quickly…

I simply repeat the words ‘cream cake’ over and over in my head as quickly as I can without stopping. You could use any word or words you like really but that’s what I chose (because I like cream cakes). It apparently works because it doesn’t give your brain time to process the panicky thoughts and so helps you to relax again. Seems strange I know … but it works for me!

There’s also a free ebook that I found really useful called ‘Get Rid of Panic and Anxiety for Good’. If you want to take a look you can find it at: http://curepanicattacks.premiergold.info/ Even though I got it for free it has helped me absolutely loads!

Your husband is suffering from hypertension and while driving it becomes more sever. The cure of hypertensive is very simple. He should not take too much fat in eatables. Salt should be minimum. He should take morning as well as evening walk daily for about one hour in a garden. He should spent at least 1 and half hour in the garden daily and inhale fresh air. He should be accompanied by his wife during the walk and should discuss topics of enjoyment. I was also suffering from the same disorder and by adopting the aforementioned habits styles, I am now almost normal. I also drive my Vespa Scooter quite confidently and do no have any tension. Good Luck awaits you. Amen.

I did this as well a year ago. I learned that it was from association w/ fearing the day ahead of me. I fear that I will have panic attacks during the day, therefore causing a panic attack at that time. I haven’t found anything to help, except for my meds. I take Lexapro and Xanax. I am currently weaning off of both and doing great. I suggest he visits a psychiatrist and get on some kind of meds. You have to have the meds to break the cycle. Once the cycle is broken, you can wean off of them and be fine, because your mind isn’t thinking that way anymore. I had SEVERE panic attacks, which is why I’ve been on medicine for a whole year. Many people take them less than that. I believe that’s the only way to fix panic attacks. Also, reading books on panic attacks, cut out caffeine in drinks completely, cut down sweets as much as possible, and talk w/ your doctor very openly. Good luck. I hope this helps.

He should not drive under the influence of medication unless you are sure his driving is o.k., but never let him drive with any kind of phobia.

I’ve been in ton (over 20) car accidents and can relate to car/driving-related panic symptoms. The best way to deal with it is actually dealing with it rather than covering it up. The best advice I could give is that he talk to someone. There is something going on here that needs to be brought into the light. They may suggest exposure therapy, drugs, or talk sessions. It is very unusual for someone to have this reaction that has not been traumatized by a car accident. Possibly just a general fear of death, what it might do to the family, etc?

While medicines can be helpful, when they become a crutch they are a hindrance to actually solving the problem. There are some herbal remedies that are less debilitating and less addictive. I highly recommend Serenity formula by Gaia herbs – http://www.gaiaherbs.com/product.php?id=262 . It has Valerian and Kava Kava, acts quickly because it is in liquid form and can take care of anxiety just as well as a light therapeutic dose of valium, xanax, etc in my opinion. By the time a pill kicks in, your attack is usually over and being on pills all the time is just no way to live.

I would suggest that he take a few minutes to situate himself behind the wheel before he starts the car. This would be the perfect time to meditate or pray – anything to ground and calm himself. If he starts into an attack while driving, I highly recommend the square breathing technique – http://www.findingyourmarbles.com/health/how-to-survive-a-panic-attack-part-1/ . This can work miracles. By controlling your breath, you control your mind and it calms you right down. It would be good for others that might be with him to learn this as well. The last thing you think in a panic attack is "I need to do square breathing" and having others cuing him at that moment would be helpful.
