Xanax for panic attacks?

My PCP has given me Xanax in the past to control intense panic attacks (she would only do it twice in the past 2 years and I understand her reasoning but I only need this medication on an accute basis and would like to have access to it when I really need it.) so I have made an appt with a psychiatrst in hopes that they will give me a script for when I need it. I am extremely anxious about going to a psych at all and am concerned he may not give me a prescription either. I don’t think it would be smart to ask for this drug by name as he will think I am trying to abuse it, which is not the case. It is something I really need at this time in my life. Suggestions? Again, I undrstand the risks of Xanax and only plan on taking it on an as needed basis. No lectures please : ) thanks.

xanax is meant primarily as a short term medication, because if you continually take it for a long period of time you develop a severe physical and psychological dependency, but it sounds to me like you would are seeking to use it only in extreme circumstances

It really depends on the physician..some may be reluctant to offer it as there are many horror stories attributed to the usage of it. I would recommend just saying something like "i have tried taking xanax before, and it had worked very well for me". and kind of hint that you only used it in extreme circumstance. The doctor may give it to you, or may provide you with another benzo such as klonopin. If they outright refuse, then they probably dont give it to anyone in the first place, in such a case you should seek another doctor

Seeing a psychiatrist is the best thing. They specialize in anxiety/panic attacks and can assess what is going on and the best treatment.
There is medication for panic attacks besides xanax.

I have suffered mysel from some panic attacks in my life. I use not to be able to go out of town and drive on the hiways. Was not able to stand in crowds either. I’ve been using PAXIL for quite some time and I’ve been feeling great since then. I doubt that Xanax will be sufficient to control that problem.

i would ask for it by name and say it has helped you in the past, also maybe ask to try something eles ativan is good for panick atacks and dr aren’t so anoying when writing it for you, if they ask about possably drug abuse just telll them flat out, i dont use this in excess in a what ever period of time i only used x many tabs and try not to be nervous shacky twitchy or any thing that could make it look like you are a user, dr’s tend to go by body lan

Oh wow I totally understand how you feel.

I’m 23 years old…been taking xanax since i was 19 but was very careful ONLY to use one when i really needed it and It helped .. I can’t even describe how they helped me!!Then my doctor cut them just like that. I explained that i could go a week without taking one etc… and she was having none of it. She sent me to a psyc who wouldn’t give them to me either. The psyc gave me other tablets which didn’t work. So now when I get a panic attack i sit on the floor and cry like i did when i first got them, I’m missing college etc.. all because my doctor wants to watch her back in case I get addicted.. which is impossible on the amount she was giving me. I know how you feel hun. Hope it works out for you :) xSorry for the lack of advice just wanted to let you know your not alone :) x

I personally do not like xanax it is very addicting and that is why she probably won’t give you too many. I had to change my attitude and tell myself that things were not as bad as thought and that if I stay positive then they went away for the most part. I still get them but I work through it when they had me on anxiety medicine it made things worse in my life. I honestly think that trying to look at the positive works! I also liek the counseling idea it dosen’t make you mental it just gives you someone to talk too about what is causing them.

All drugs have adverse reactions-you and only you must weigh the pros and cons….I choose to treat my mental problems with exercise and diet, dependency SUCKS!

Scripts have a shut off date. Either you take it or you don’t.

When you take a drug occasionally you desensitize your body to the drug and it doesn’t help anymore.

Tell the psychiatrist the whole true story . He’s heard it all before .

Does your PCP know you are going to see a psychiatrist.?

At the first sign of one, employ an ANTI PANIC ATTACK breathing technique. Advice from a clinical psychologist is to breathe in to the count of 3: (one thousand one; one thousand two; one thousand three) each takes around a second to say to yourself, in your mind, and out to the count of 3.

View http://deeplyrelax.com & http://www.deepsloweasy.com/html/intro.htm Note: the controlled breathing only helps with the symptoms, as do medications/herbal remedies. Address the underlying cause, which requires some form of therapy; see your-mental-health.8m.com, below, re anxiety, on pages H, & I. Imagine that the cause of your panic; your anxieties, fears, your self doubts, self recriminations, all the agonizing "I’m-so-Stupids"; every painful "I-can’t-do-it" are huge raging, hurtful bulls snorting and charging at you. You see them coming at you and you hold out your red matador’s cape at arms length and simply let them charge right by. Every time they come at you, hold out your arm with the red cape and let them rage and snort and go right on past. Some people recommend nettle tea, with a little honey. Others use Lavender tea, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, but use no milk or cream with herbal teas, or Valerian (caution: use it for 3 weeks at most!). Know how these affect you before driving, or doing anything dangerous, and it is far better to use the treatments, rather than relying on herbal remedies, or medications, as they will always be available immediately, and free. Free online PANIC COURSE – http://www.panic-attacks.co.uk also available by email. See the section on panic attacks at http://www.mind.org.uk also Ebooklet form. They recommend letting a panic attack run its course, without doing anything to treat it, so you KNOW you will survive it. The usual maximum is 30 minutes, until symptoms begin to subside.

I was also suffering from mild panic attacks and really bothers me a lot and I couldn’t sleep right. My friend psychiatrist’s advice was to take Xanax (generic) which I ordered from http://www.medsheaven.com and amazingly it works for me. Since then I’ve been using it during times that I needed it. But it’s still best to consult your doctor.
